Shuly Xochitl Cawood is an American published author of fiction and nonfiction.

Shuly originally hails from the state of Ohio but has since moved. She now resides in the South and has been there for some time. How long has she been there? Enough time to know what real sweet tea is and that when people around there say barbecue, they’re referring to pork.

She is an award winning author. She has written such books as her own memoir, The Going and Goodbye. She has also written an advice book, ’52 Things’, a poetry collection that has won the Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry, as well as the books Trying to Grow and A Small Thing to Want.

The author attended Queens University, where she graduated with her MFA. Shuly also attended Ohio State University, studying journalism and graduating with her MA. She grew up writing her own stories using the blue Selectric typewriter owned by her father. She has had her work featured in publications such as The Rumpus, Brevity, and the Cider Press Review.

She has written columns for publications such as The News & Neighbor and Johnson City Press. Besides writing books herself, the author also teaches others how to write memoirs specifically. She also speaks at events and to book clubs.

This memoir examines themes such as leaving and loss as well as a search for meaning that is conducted through remaining memories. This book weaves its way through the rural parts of Ohio as well as the south of the United States and Mexico with its small towns.

52 Things I Wish I Could Have Told Myself When I Was 17 is an advice book from Shuly Xochitl Cawood. It was published in 2018. There have been many positive reviews for this book. The Dayton Daily News called this book a “must-have” for readers. Courtney LeBlanc praised the author’s advice given on bangs and commends her for exploring topics that are more serious, such as health, love and faith.
