Sofie Ryan is the pseudonym used by a Canadian writer Darlene Ryan. Born in 1950, Sofie writes Mystery and Thriller novels and also writes under the pseudonym Sofie Kelly. Sofie is a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Education. She loves cats, and that is why she wrote the Magical Cats mysteries, but even though she is fondly in love with the cats, she does not own one since her husband is extremely allergic to them.

Sofie greatest inspiration comes from the American-Canadian author of children books, Robert Munsch. During an interview, (posted on the author’s blog), Sofie admits that Munsch characters are not so perfects, but they are authentic, her favorite book being Giant or Waiting for the Thursday Boat, one of Munsch controversial books because of the way he represents God.

She loves creating characters that are well mannered, that make interactions between people who do not know each other well go smoothly. She also loves characters with a sense of humor. Sofie is married; she resides in East Coast- less than two hours’ drive from the ocean, and during her free time, you will find her practicing Wu style tai chi or prowling around thrift stores.

Sofie Ryan is famously known as the author of Second Chance Mystery that debuted in 2014, after the publication of The Whole Cat and Caboodle, the first novel in the series.

The Whole Cat and Caboodle (2014)

The Whole Cat and Caboodle is the debut novel in Second Chance Cat series by Sofie Ryan. Meet Sarah Grayson, the owner of Second Chance; a reputable repurpose shop where refinished furniture, teacup gardens and priceless treasures are found in abundance. Sarah is much in love with what she does in her new career, including going to flea markets and auctions to discover what she and her handyman Mac can repair or even upgrade and then sell.

Then there is Sarah’s mother who recently remarried and is on a honeymoon with her husband. In her granny’s absence, the focus shifts to Sarah and her newly acquired shop where women help out.

Sarah is no stranger to these ladies- as they have always been good friends and amongst her principal encouragers. She hopes to keep Charlotte, Maddie, Rose, and Liz out of trouble until her grandmother returns home. Then there is Elvis a stray cat and Sarah’s newest and faithful companion. His scarred face might make anyone think that he has used almost several of his nine cat lives and his leonine instincts are far much better than those of the four humans.

So when Charlotte and Sarah arrive at Legacy Pines, a luxurious apartment complex in their picturesque town of North Harbor, Maine, they meet Alfred Peterson. Sarah and her four friends have business to attend with Alfred. However Maddie, one of her friends does not show up for the workshop, Sarah is prompted to investigate what Maddie had been up to. What they discover in Maddie’s garden is precisely the opposite of what they expected- their friend was sitting at an outdoor table with her new male friend, Arthur Fenety- and Arthur is dead.

The only prime suspect in the murder case is Maddie, who is subsequently arrested and jailed. Against Sarah’s good intentions, Charlotte, Rose and Liz decide to play detective and help prove that Maddie is innocent and also unravel the real killer.

It seems that the dead man had a few secrets that he would not share with anyone. The revelations of these secrets open up a new endless list of people who wanted him dead. Elvis- the cat, gives her opinions whether anyone wanted to translate them or not. The ladies embark on one thrilling adventure to another in pursuit of clues including those unearthed by the tech-savvy man- Alfred Peterson.

This cozy mystery debut novel is an engaging read and has a great twist. Even though Sarah is the main character in the story- with her cat, Elvis coming a close second, she is not the person investigating the death of Arthur. She is sort of a wrangler of the group who sets up an office in her store and starts calling themselves, – the Charlie’s Angels.

Added to the fascinating character mix is Nick, one of Sarah’s high school crush and Michelle Andrews, a self-independent lady who used to be Sarah’s best friends but not anymore. Can the old flame spark once more? Can the old best friends mend their relationship once more?

If you love Magical Cat Mysteries by Sofie Kelly pseudonym of Sofie Ryan, then you will also find The Whole Cat and Caboodle an excellent match for you.

Buy a Whisker

Things have been quiet in the picturesque coastal town of North Harbor, Maine since Sarah and her instinctive cat Elvis solved the first murder mystery. Everything at Sarah’s store, where she sells repurposed and refurbished items is running smoothly. However, then she gets entangled in a conspiracy surrounding the developing waterfront. Everyone in the town including Sarah is in for it. However, there is one holdout- baker Lily Carter.

So when Lily is later found dead in her bakery, it is apparent that the killer wanted to get rid of the obstacle to the development of the local town. Soon Sarah discovers that nothing is simple as it seems and with the help of her cat’s mysterious ability to detect a single lie, Sarah narrows down her suspect’s lists. However, the big question is, can she take down the killer before he kills again?

Buy a Whisker is the second novel in Second Chance Cat Mystery. Sarah and Elvis are the heroine, and the hero is this delightful series. The author, Sofie Ryan does a fantastic job of crafting her characters that have a significant impact on the overall novel. Sarah and her friends are creative and bring their unique skills and talents to the store of vintage and repurposed goods. The novel plot is excellent, while the twists send the Sarah and her friends (the Angels) in different direction adding suspense and excitement to the story. If you like cozy mystery series, you will love Second Chance Cat Mystery novels.

A good (cat loving) friend gave me all the Magical Cats books and I LOVED the series. I’m starting the Second Chance Cat Mysteries. I’m enjoying this series too. I do miss Owen and Hercules and their antics, especially their spats with each other. Still makes me laugh!
    Keep writing!

I can’t express how much I enjoy both series I especially love the euphemisms for more “naughty” words — “glass bowl” and the suggestion that Rose do something anatomically impossible — had me really laughing. Keep them coming – I only have the last two left to read. And I’m nearly finished with the Magical Cats series as well.. don’t know WHAT I will do then!.

I am so glad I discovered your books. I love both series, I love your gentle characters and the marvelous cats, and the laughs. I only wish there were more books–keep them coming, please! I love mysteries, but these are such a relief from all the nasties from other books. Thank you so much!
