Spectre Series

An American writer whose name has become synonymous with action thriller and suspense novels, C.W. Lemoine is well known for his unique brand of nail-biting storytelling. Taking the reader on a journey, he really pushes the form to the limit, giving his audience what they looking for from the genre and more. With a background in military himself, he’s also known for his attention to detail, making his stories not only gripping, but highly realistic too. Drawing heavily from writers such as Vince Flynn and Brad Thor, he definitely understands the genre too, making for some intelligent and well told espionage thrillers. Over the course of his writing career he’s also produced a number of series too, with readers returning time and time again.

One such series is that of his ‘Spectre’ line of books, which follows the American fighter pilot known as Cal ‘Spectre’ Martin, as he undertakes flight missions in his F-16. Drawing heavily from his own experience as a fighter pilot, Lemoine adds a high-degree of realism quite unlike any other. Each book in the series sees him on a different mission, as the plots twist and turn, creating an elaborate series of threads.

Spectre Rising

Initially brought out in 2013 on the 25th of August, this would be the first book in the long-running Spectre series of novels. Previously bringing out a prequel titled ‘Spectre: Origins,’ this would be the first full novel, along with the first adventure for Cal ‘Spectre’ Martin. It would also pave the way for the many books to follow, really setting the overall tone for the series as a whole.

There’s a lot of technical detail here with a solid story underneath as well, with them both working together to creating a compelling novel. Knowing the character well, Lemoine makes the most of the engaging premise, really pushing it to its full potential every step of the way. Drawing the reader in with its sense of authenticity and holding them there throughout, it’s the ideal opening story to a series such as this.

Previously grounded after an incident that took place in Iraq, Cal ‘Spectre’ Martin is living civilian life with his fellow F-16 fighter pilot fiancée. That’s when she goes missing during what was supposed to be a routine training mission off the south coast of Florida, leaving him to head back into the war on terror. Taking to the streets of Miami he begins to uncover a conspiracy of international proportions, as he finds himself in a race against the clock. With national security under threat, he must not only battle with his inner demons, but he must also change his entire outlook and what he thought he knew. Can he find his fiancée in time? Where will the conspiracy take him, and can he stop it? What will become of Spectre rising?

Avoid. Negotiate. Kill

First released in 2014 on the 23rd of May, this would follow on from the previous book, this being the second in the ‘Spectre’ series. Delivering its own action thriller story, it takes many of the arcs from before, while allowing it to be its own story. Much of the narrative is self-contained, although there are many elements from before that are brought over into the story.

Once again using his knowledge and experience of his time as a fighter pilot, Lemoine really pushes the format to its limit here. Testing the boundaries, the story definitely doesn’t hold back, giving the reader everything they’ve now come to expect from the series. Providing plenty of surprising twists and turns too, there’s a lot of suspense at the heart of this, as it makes for an exciting and compelling read.

Recruited by ‘Project Archangel,’ Cal ‘Spectre’ Martin believes his past demons have been set aside, as he goes to work for the secretive government organization. That’s when a mission to neutralize and secure chemical weapons in Syria goes horrifically wrong, seeing him grounded once again. It’s only a few days, though, into his forced retirement that there’s an assassination attempt on him and his friends. With his friend killed, Spectre must now find the mysterious assassins that are hunting him down and stop them in their tracks. Why are they on his tail though? Just who exactly is after him? What will happen when the different options are either ‘avoid, negotiate, or kill?’

Archangel Fallen

This was originally brought out in 2015 on the 14th of July to much acclaim, and was the third book in the ongoing ‘Spectre’ series. It would also pave the way for the fourth book titled ‘Executive Reaction’ to come out not long after, followed by the fifth book, ‘Brick by Brick,’ in 2016. ‘Archangel Fallen’ itself once again features a compelling action espionage thriller, filled with both suspense and tension. There’s a lot of excitement here, as it gets straight into the story, really pushing the narrative forwards with a real sense of urgency to its pacing.

After escaping an assassin, Cal ‘Spectre’ Martin is now on the run, keeping themselves hidden within the shadows, as he’s now a fugitive. Putting the pieces together, he must now seek to understand and fully comprehend a conspiracy that’s operating at an international level. Meanwhile an especially driven FBI agent hopes to bring him to justice, as Cal must keep out of his way and one step ahead. Unearthing international espionage through political back-offices, he begins to discover the truth as to what’s really going on. Will he be able to find out in time before it’s too late? Can he clear his own name in the process? What will become of the Archangel fallen?

The Spectre Series

While the series may be very much of its genre, it really knows and understands the format, taking it in new and interesting directions. On top of that Lemoine fully understands the world, having truly inhabited it himself, and this understanding comes across on the page. With plenty of potential to keep continuing, it’s a series that will carry on finding readers every day from across the world.
