Stephen Greenblatt is an American author and professor. He was born on November 7, 1943 in Boston but grew up in Newton, Massachusetts.

He attended high school in Newton and would move on to go to Yale University. He studied there to get his B.A. degree in 1964 and got his Ph.D. in 1969. He would also attend Pembroke College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, getting his Masters degree in 1966. He has also taught at Berkeley’s University of California as well as Harvard. He taught for nearly three decades at Berkeley before he decided to accept a Harvard position.

Stephen Greenblatt has taught as a professor at Harvard University and John Cogan University, which named him their professor of Humanities in the year 2000. He teaches in the areas of English and American Literature as well as language. He also served as a general editor for books like a Norton Anthology on English literature and is the author of several books. These include books on William Shakespeare and how he came to be where he is as well as Hamlet, new historicism, the modernizing of the world, and more.

He is also a co-editor and founding member of Representations, a journal. He has received several honors for his writing and work. For the Shakespearean Negotiations, he received the James Russell Lowell Prize from the MLA as well as the Mellon Foundation’s award for Distinguished Humanist and from Berkeley and the University of California received a distinguished teaching award.

The author belongs to the American Philosophical Society as well as the American Academy of the Arts & Sciences. He splits up his timing living in New England. Some of the time he resides in Vermont and part of the time he lives in Massachusetts in the Cambridge area.
