Stephen Mertz is a bestselling American fiction author that has made his name writing mainstream suspense and thriller novels. His novels cover a wide range of writing styles from hardboiled noir, to historical speculative thrillers, and paranormal dark suspense novels.
The author was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is where he spent most of his childhood. As a child, he had a very ordinary middle-class upbringing in a loving but small family.
When his mother and father discovered that he had a love for books and storytelling they encouraged his creativity. They used to bring him all manner of fiction and non-fiction books that fulled his love for books even further.
During his high school and college years, he scandalized his well-intentioned literary teachers with blunder and thud melodramas.
After graduating from high school he worked a variety of jobs but throughout that time all he wanted was to become a full-time publishing freelance author.
For Stephen Mertz, writing was always a question of when rather than if. Mertz believes that he was born an author as he began scribbling stories as a thirteen-year-old and has never stopped since.
Given his passion for becoming an author, he broke away from a regular 9-5 about four decades ago. Since then he has been living on the backroads and surviving by his wits.
When he was trying to make it as an author he did all manner of jobs that include fronting for blue bands which made him quite the musician.
He also managed a used record shop in New York, was the owner of a second-hand bookshop situated in a small town in the panhandle and for a time was the manager of a summer resort.
However, he spent much of his time during the 70s and 80s on the road as he soaked in all he could in experiences that he would later distill in her novels. Mertz published “Some Die Hard” his debut thriller writing under the name Stephen Brett.
He would sell the detective thriller work to a national mystery magazine. He would soon publish several suspense and mystery short stories under several pseudonyms.
Stephen Mertz’s writing output significantly increased when he would become one of the most in-demand novelists. Averaging about four novels every decade, he would become one of the most prolific authors in the several genres he was writing.
In addition to his own novels, he has also contributed to popular series such as the “Mack Bolan” series. In fact, the novels he penned in the series have been deemed to be among the best by fans.
Under the pseudonym Jim Case and Jack Buchanan, he created the “Cody’s Army” and “Mark Stone” series.
His novels have received critical acclaim with Booklist calling one of his novels a white knuckle fast-paced read. He has also been praised by his contemporaries with Joe R. Lansdale calling one of his works a sharp and straight hard-edged thriller.
Outside of his writing, Stephen Mertz teaches creative writing and is one of the most popular speakers and lectures at universities and writer groups.
He has been unlucky in love and has several ex-wives and was lucky enough not to get any children from any of his marriages. Still, he likes to consider himself happily domesticated having been married to the same woman for more than a decade.
He currently makes his home on the West Coast even though he was born and spent most of his childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Stephen Mertz’s novel “Dragonfire!” introduces Cody who is on assignment to find and extract Dr. Kwan a defecting physicist, the creator of Dragonfire a ghastly mega weapon.
But his mission goes terribly wrong when a reconnaissance plane belonging to the US Navy disappears.
It had then been observing the nuclear submarine activity of the Chinese over the South China sea. The dive team that was sent to investigate also goes missing.
Complicating matters is the fact that some renegade Chinese military officers are staging a coup d’etat. The coup leaders intend to establish a new world order and to do so they are planning to launch a nuclear holocaust.
Jack Cody does not know who she can trust in the deadly maze even as he races against time to resolve a potentially explosive situation.
Mertz writes a blockbuster action-adventure series with a refreshing hero. It is a work that gets off to an explosive pace and never lets up right to the very last page.
“Camp David Has Fallen!” by Stephen Mertz is set at Camp David. It is the only palace that ranks as high as Air Force One and the White House is one of the most secured sites in the United States.
Located 60 miles northwest of the capital in the rugged hills of Maryland, the private retreat is the playground for the President, his family, and staff.
It is also the perfect setting where many presidents have had their affairs far away from the prying eyes of the public.
When the Prime Minister of Israel arrives at the country retreat to meet with the United States president, the stakes could not be higher.
Terrorists take the opportunity to try to take out the two men as they infiltrate the highly fortified compound.
There is soon all manner of death, explosions, chaos, firefights, and deception that turn the place into a wholesale killing field.
Follow Cody as he collaborates with a team of agents from the Secret Service as they fight off the terrorists that have entered the inner sanctum.
The author offers detailed descriptions of the fights between the defenders and the terrorists both of which are determined to do what it takes to win.
Stephen Mertz’s novel The Fires of Allah is another great works from the master of action-adventure. In this one, Cody is embarking on what has to be one of his most dangerous missions to date.
Jack Cody is on the path to healing as he recovers from severe trauma that almost got him to commit suicide.
But then his recovery and his relationship with Sara Durell a CIA control officer and everything that had been going on in his life have to be put on hold.
He is going against a coalition of Islamic terrorists, American Nazis, and stolen nuclear weapons as he seeks to stop the destruction of a major American city by Nuclear armageddon.
