About Steve Moore
Largely writing for children, the American author Steve Moore is well known for his funny and inventive stories for younger readers. Combining a number of different subjects and styles, he casts his eye on a range of different topics, really bringing them to the forefront. Often creating comics, many of which are well known, he’s highly regarded not only nationally, but internationally as well. Drawing from a range of different influences, his approach is straightforward and to-the-point, immediately getting to the heart of whatever he’s trying to say.

Sometimes featuring sports in his stories, many of his books follow on from one another thematically, as he writes several series. Drawing from a whole range of authors, he’s a writer never short of inspiration, showing a lot of creativity and versatility as a writer. Always looking for new ideas, he provides plenty of witty insights of his own, making his writing personal and unique to him. This is something that many readers from all over have warmed to, with many finding much to admire in his many novels.

With a past in film-making too, he’s no stranger to cinema as well, having previously been a producer on several film projects. Working as a screenwriter too, he understands the craft of storytelling visually, which something that can clearly be seen in his comics. Creating strong characters that really stand out, resonating with the reader, he leaves a lasting impact on his audience worldwide. With a lot more to come he definitely isn’t stopping any time soon, as his writing career is growing upwards and onwards.

Early and Personal Life
Born in Denver in the United States, the future author to be Steve Moore would grow up La Canada Flintridge, California. Interested in both reading and writing from an early age, he would heavily invest himself in the craft, learning as much as he could. This would develop over time as he would refine and hone his skills, building upon his voice as a writer, allowing him to find his niche.

Attending Oregon State University, he would also later graduate from the University of Oregon with a Masters Degree. This would help build the foundation of his writing career that was to follow, as he’d go on to work in both film and writing. Currently still writing to this very day, he continues to put out work regularly, with a lot more set to follow in the future.

Writing Career
Starting out as a cartoonist Moore would rise to fame in the national newspapers, making his name with his famously syndicated comic-strip ‘In The Bleachers.’ Formerly working as a news executive himself too, many of his cartoons would be a regular fixture in papers such as The Los Angeles Times. This would see him producing various different collections of his work, beginning with ‘Born in the Bleachers: Sports Cartoons’ in 1989.

Later he’d also begin the ‘King of the Bench’ series of novels, beginning with ‘No Fear!’ in 2017, which would be a collection of comics for younger readers. He’d then follow this up with ‘Control Freak’ that same year, along with ‘Kicking and Screaming’ in 2018, and then ‘Comeback Kid’ a few months later. Winning awards and nominations for his work, he continues to build upon his name and brand as a writer with something to say.

Kicking and Screaming
Initially published through the HarperCollins publishing label, this would first come out in 2018 on the 27th of March. It would mark the third title in the ongoing ‘King of the Bench’ series of children’s novels, continuing the much loved comic’s franchise. Filled with humorous illustrations, it continues from the previous two, featuring its own self-contained instalment.

Making for a funny and engaging story, this really captures a sense of what school is actually like, with readers young and old easily relating. Many of the characters are extremely well written, allowing the audience to fully invest themselves in the narrative. It’s illustrations throughout are also fun and lively, adding to the story and giving it an extra level of engagement and humor.

Regarding himself as the ‘king of the bench,’ Steve has no intention of playing in his school Soccer team, saying he’s no interested. Overhearing him say this, one of the school’s best female athletes Becky O’Callahan drives him to participate and try out for the team himself. Playing for the Spiro T. Agnew JV Soccer team, he plays in an away game, making for one hilarious weekend of Soccer. Will he win and overcome the odds stacked against him? Can he find a passion for Soccer? What will happen when finds why the game has left everyone kicking and screaming?

Comeback Kid
Once again published through the HarperCollins publishing outlet, this was initially released in 2018 on the 18th of September. Published not long after the third just a few months earlier, this was the fourth title in the ongoing ‘King of the Bench’ series of novels. Brought to life with bright and colorful illustrations, it continues in much the same vein as before with another self-contained story set in the same world.

This time it’s basketball season, and it’s time for self-proclaimed king of the bench Steve to take up the sport and give it a go. Joining the Mighty Plumbers basketball team with his friends Carlos and Joey, along with super athlete Becky O’Callahan, they intend to play the court together. Sitting on the sidelines as usual, though, Steve has a trick up his sleeve that could potentially turn the whole game around in their favor. Will he be able to come through? Can he win the game and save the day? What will become of the Comeback Kid?

Revolution in the Bleachers: More Sports Cartoons
First published back in May 1991, this collection of comic strips would come out through the Collier Books publishing imprint. Bringing together a collection of Steve Moore’s ‘In the Bleachers’ comics, this provides an insight for any and all fans of the author and his work. There would be other collections, as most of his nationally syndicated work was published at one time or another, adding to his overall body of work.
