Stuart Melvin Kaminsky will forever be remembered as both an enthusiastic writer and film professor who kept his readers on their toes with his puzzled stories. He was born in 1934 to Leo and Dorothy Kamisky in Chicago. Stuart started showing interest in writing immediately after high school when his father moved to the northern side of Chicago and opened a grocery store. Most of his time he would occupy himself with children’s mystery series books by the Whiteman publishers. The books were very popular during the 1930’s and 40’s and were mainly about people solving mysteries. Clearly this is where he got most of his inspiration when writing his popular series ‘Toby Peters series’.

He had a PhD in doctorate of Speech from Northwestern University, a B.S in Journalism and M.A in English from the University of Illinois. In the same Northwestern University, he worked as a professor and head of the film division in between 1973-1989. He was actually Sara Paretsky’s mentor who was his student at that time towards becoming a skilled writer. Later on he got married to one Merle Gordon who later bore him 3 kids namely Lucy, Toby and Peter.
During his 75 years life span, Stuart was able to publish 50 books. Apart from that he also published 5 biographies, 35 short stories and 4 textbooks. His very first book would have to be ‘Bullet for a star’ done in the year 1977. The storyline is set in Hollywood with Tom Peters as the main character.

Books Written

There are so many best seller books written by Stuart M. Kaminsky. Actually, he has books in almost all genres. He’s first novel was written in the year 1977 entitled Bullet for a Star that featured Toby Peters. With time he went on writing 60 years and he became a successful author in his time. Most of his publications are story collections and nonfiction works. Other achievements include, Kaminsky being the president of the writers of America.

In addition, he inspired other many writers from the West such as Sara Paretsky and V. I. Warshawski. On the other hand, he spent time in film school where he taught film studies at a university over in the Northwestern in the State of Florida for around 7 years.

Of the many books he wrote, he compiled a few to form series. One of the known series is Lew Fonesca. Lew Fonesca was a series that compromised of many short books.

The book features Lew Fonesca as the main character. The book starts by building up a story about the life of Lew. The book starts by showing how Lew quit his job when he worked as a process server at the office of the State Attorney. Lew moves with his Toyota across the road to a parking lot over in Sarasota in Florida. With time Lew gets to know some few people inside the small town of Sarasota in Florida and in fact gets a job at one the law firm within the small are. He is employed by a man named Carl Sebastian who seeks to find his missing wife.

However, through all the books in the Series, Lew is slowly discovering that the few leads are leading him to a mysterious burly man. Friends come to his aid and he is able to come closer to finding Melanie who is the wife of one Sebastian. This is one captivating book that keeps the reader anticipating for more of what is going to happen. One of the books that Kaminsky should be credited for is this book. This is one amazing piece.

Bullet for a Star

A bullet for a star is no different historical mystery as compared to Lew Fonesca. One of Kaminksy attributes is mystery and leaving his audience waiting for more. His books are a classic and so is Bullet for a star.

This book features Toby Peters as a detective in Hollywood who tries to solve mysteries within the known city. The book starts as Toby is looking at his glossy photograph as he is pondering upon picture he found of Errol with a girl naked. This becomes his interests which he seeks to find out the truth. Ultimately, he finds himself at a crossroad unsure whether to chase after Flynn or just pursue the bullet mystery.

This is one of Kaminksy earliest books that put him in the market. In addition, Kaminisky decided to make a whole series concerning this using the fictional character Toby hence making the whole series known as Toby Peters.

Additional Information

Stuart was one of the multi-diverse authors. This is because he ventured both in writing and shooting films. This is why it was easier to shoot his movies. His early foundation in movie making gave him a platform when it came to shooting some of the stories in his books.

Notably, Stuart wrote almost any genre known in the history of man-kind. He developed fictional stories to non-fiction ones which were mostly biographies. He also became a master in the art of filmmaking. In addition, he is known to have edited several books such as Opening Shots in 1991 and Show Business is Murder in 2004.

Each and every one of his series have a storyline of the main character from the first book to the last. He intelligently added challenges and hurdles which the character has to overcome. The more the books you have read, the more you don’t want to stop. He was a legend and will always be known as a man who change art and came with a new form of expressing it.

Unfortunately, Stuart M. Kaminsky passed in the month of October 2009. They had recently moved with his wife, Enid, to St. Louis in Missouri. He suffered a stroke and two days later he passed away. However, this was a problem that had developed since 1950s. In spite of this, Stuart M. Kaminsky died a brave man. He might be dead but he’s work lives on.
