Stuart M. Kaminsky was an American author best known for writing the Toby Peters series of detective novels, the Inspector Porfiry Petrovich Rostnikov series, the Abe Lieberman series, and the Lew Fonesca series. During his career, Stuart wrote sixty-three novels and eleven non-fiction books.

Each of the series features a unique protagonist in a unique time and place. The Toby Peters takes place in Hollywood during the 1940s, the Inspector Porfiry Petrovich Rostnikov series follows a Moscow police inspector, the Abe Lieberman series follows a process server in Sarasota, Florida, and the Abe Lieberman series follows a veteran Chicago police officer.

Kaminsky won the 1989 Edgar Award for Best Novel for the novel A Cold Read Sunrise. The author was also awarded the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America before his death.

During his life he also wrote screenplay, including the 1987 film Enemy Territory starring Gary Frank, Ray Parker Jr., and Jan-Michael Vincent.

Vengeance is the first book in the Lew Fonseca Mystery series. The story follows Fonseca in his job as a process server in Florida. He had worked the same position in Cook County, Illinois before packing up his belongings and heading south after the loss of his wife. He had planned to go all the way to Key West, but ended up in Sarasota after his car broke down. Lew made his home there and picked up work doing investigations for local attorneys.

Lew is hired by one of these lawyers for a more personal case: to find the lawyer’s wife. The search soon leads to him being followed by a mysterious man and another missing person case. Lew will get help from his friends in his search, but he’ll need to find her fast before it’s too late.

Kaminsky also wrote books for the CSI: New York series, based on the popular television franchise. Dead of Winter follows Detective Mac Taylor, a crime scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and each person has their own story. He works with Detective Stella Bonasera in the Big Apple. They end up getting a case of a dead man in an elevator with no bullets, no DNA evidence, and seemingly no motive. It may just be the perfect crime and it could end up as one of their biggest toughest tests yet.

Lieberman’s Folly is the first book in the Abe Lieberman series. The story picks up as Lieberman is sixty years old and a veteran detective. He has been partners with Bill Hanrahan for a long time, but lately Hanrahan has been drinking heavily after his wife left him. The two spend a hot Chicago afternoon meeting with an informant who needs their help to protect her from an out of control john. The two agree to watch on their off time. Hanrahan has first watch, but his drinking gets the best of him and the woman he was protecting is murdered. The detectives are racked with guilt and set out to find the killer and bring them to justice.

The series continues with Lieberman’s Choice. Abe gets every cop’s worst nightmare as he needs to investigate a fellow colleague. Bernie Shepard found out his wife was cheating with a fellow cop and murdered them both. Now he’s holed up in his apartment with a rifle and explosives. It will be up to Abe and his partner Bill to keep him at bay. Bernie demands to meet with the police captain and is threatening more violence if he doesn’t get it. For a veteran cop like Bernie, he knows that both choices can only end badly.

Death of a Dissident is the first book in the Inspector Rostnikov series. The book introduces readers to Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov of the Moscow police force. Things are not easy for him. His wife is Jewish which makes his superiors suspicious of her and his dreams of becoming a weight-lifter seem to be falling by the wayside. At work, a famous dissident is about to go on trial when they are murdered. Porfiry must find the killer, but also do so in a way that is acceptable to the KGB. No easy task. The killer ends up striking again and a unique pattern appears. The killer is only using weapons based on distinctly Russian things: a hammer, a sickle, and a vodka bottle.

Black Knight in Red Square is the second book in the Inspector Rostnikov series. This story takes place during the Moscow Film Festival. The festival is meant to be a symbol of Moscow re-emerging as a world class city, but for others it is a target. A gang of zealots has targeted the event and set out to attack those who are there for the festival. They are dangerous and efficient. The Kremlin is doing what they can to cover up the killings, but they’ll need Inspector Rostnikov to solve the case as soon as possible to avoid and scrutiny.

Bullet for a Star is the first book in the Toby Peters Mysteries series. Toby Peters was fired from the Warner Brothers lot for breaking an actor’s arm. Since the he has taken up work as a private detective. He is given a second chance by the Warners when they bring him in for a job they need kept quiet. There is a picture of Errol Flynn in a compromising position with an underage girl. Flynn swears it is a fake, but the studio can’t afford to take him at his word. Toby is sent to deliver the money to the blackmailer and bring back the photo negative. Things end up going awry and now it’s up to Peters to clear Flynn’s name.

The second book in the Toby Peters Mysteries series is Murder on the Yellow Brick Road. It is a year after the success of The Wizard of Oz, but now Judy Garland has found the body of a dead Munchkin. The studio brings in Toby to investigate as they need to protect Judy’s image. Toby soon finds that it’s not only her image that he’ll need to protect as she is in the sights of a killer.
