Hope has been taking every available job in the Caribbean Honey cruise ship, and she perfected them all. The ambitious woman is anticipating promotion; after all, she has worked enough to earn it. It is the beginning of the cruise season, and the cruise family unites, old friends, wish that this will be a better time for them all. Unfortunately, Hope’s dream of promotion is crushed when a newcomer named Felix is promoted.
It seems like it’s going to be another season of serving in the dining hall for Hope despite all the effort she put in the previous season. Why won’t they promote her while she has given every task in the ship her all? It has been four years of dedicating herself to her work, and Hope is not getting rewarded as she expected. With all she has been doing on the cruise ship, Hope is also taking an online course to increase her professional skills. Sadly, the cruise’s management seems blind to all her efforts.
Understandably, Hope is angry and disappointed. While she has good friends such as Ansh and Da-eun, to help her cope, she feels like Felix is the reason why she got passed over this time around. This can only mean that she doesn’t like him much and when Felix creates a problem with some guests, Hope’s hatred for him only intensifies. However, when someone dies on the cruise, Felix and Hope have to work together to solve the mystery. Hope feels that it’s her duty to find the killer, and Felix wants to get involved as well. Can these two stay objective and solve this murder without getting on each other’s nerves?
Join Felix, Hope, and the rest of the crew on this cruise where sparks will fly, friendships will be made, and life will be lost. The cruise ship setting is quite exciting, and the murder is quite unexpected. It will be hard to guess the killer, and you can bet that you will be surprised when this is revealed. Felix and Hope are intriguing, and so is Catalina, Ansh, and the other side characters. The author has done a great job of giving Hope’s back story, so it is easy to understand her actions and disappointments.
Drugged on Deck is an excellent start to an exciting series a perfect choice if you are looking for a cozy mystery story. The few twists along the way will keep you guessing while the flawless narration and steady pace will hold your attention to the end. The storyline is quite simple, and the narration is perfect, so following the story from start to finish is easy.
Books and Brews
Books and Brews is the first book in the Back Room Bookstore series. The book stars Monica Montoya, the new owner of the Back Room Bookstore. Monica is new in town, and she is also new in the mortal realm. This only means that she has a lot of adjusting to do. The young girl has just taken over her aunt’s shop and is determined to ensure that it runs efficiently. Aside from learning how to run the bookstore, Monica also needs to know how to hide her magic. Now that she lives amongst humans, magic will take a back seat.
Even though Bankstown is a small town, the bookstore gets a decent amount of traffic for two reasons. One, there is the store signature coffee that serves as the perfect morning dose for many of the town’s residents. The bookstore also houses the backdoor to the supernatural realm. This can only translate to more work for Monica, who has to keep a perfect balance between the natural and the supernatural.
Brian, a local cop and a regular at the bookstore, is surprised to find a new face behind the counter. The young man finds Monica intriguing, and these two become fast friends. Their friendship grows when a murder happens too close home. Brian is determined to find the killer to boost his portfolio at work, and Monica is willing to use her magic to ensure that justice is done. Now the normal life that Monica anticipated is gone, and with a killer on the loose, she has to step up and help her friend ensure that justice is done. With well-meant but somehow uncontrolled spells and Brian’s investigative skills, this duo sets to solve a murder that has shaken this small town to its core.
Follow Monica and Brian as they work to uncover a magical mystery. Monica has a twin named Mona, and just like her sister, she is quite a delight. There is also Monica’s grumpy familiar to meet. Will Monica manage to keep her secret for the sake of those who depend on her? How about the growing friendship between Brian and Monica? Any chance of romance between them in the future?
Books and Brews is a light and fun read with just the right dose of mystery. The magic bit adds some character to the story, and Monica’s failed attempts at magic will leave you in stitches. The relationship between Monica and Brian is admirable, and it is cute how they look out for each other while they haven’t been in each other’s lives for that long. If you want an intriguing story to fill a lazy afternoon, this is a perfect choice. The storyline is straightforward, and because the story is interesting, it is easy to stay focused to the end.
