You may have seen her popular books on store shelves nationwide. Her books have been popular in the erotic romance genre and are yet becoming increasingly popular. She is known by her pen name CC Gibbs. She is Susan Johnson, author of best-selling American series of multiple New York Times sexually explicit bestsellers. Johnson goes by the name CC Gibbs and is popular for her “larger than life” characters that provide a secret escape for her growing reading audience worldwide. For decades, her books have been the buzz in romance. Her early beginnings as an avid reader brought her to the place of publishing her very best books.
Best-selling author Susan Johnson was born July 7th 1939. Although she was raised in a small town in northern Minnesota, she also has family ties in various towns in Finland. In her small town in Minnesota, just across Canada, she resided in a community that was sparsely populated so she relied on her imagination to entertain her most days. She would make up stories of handsome men and beautiful women. Many days her daydreams filled with handsome men and beautiful would captivate her focus. Johnson expresses that this place was “as close to heaven as any creative artist would wish.”
In fact, she credits much of her imaginings to her years of avid reading. Johnson expresses that she has an immense sized library holding over 10,000 books. She says, “There’s so much history that interests me, I consider what kind of hero would fit into that milieu and then find a woman who will make his life interesting in a variety of ways.” Johnson also enjoys finding inspiration on popular websites like Google and Pinterest.
Susan started her writing career on a very spontaneous whim. One day while reading a book she did not enjoy, Johnson turned to her husband and expressed contempt saying, “How the hell did this book get published?” She continued to express her upset met by her husband’s suggestion to write the book herself. “If you think you’re so smart, why don’t you write a book?” It was then that she began writing and learning as she grew into a well-known romance writer.
Her process of writing is different. Johnson takes about six months to finish an entire story. She determines the amount of time to compose a story entirely upon how much research required before she is able to begin writing. Her plan is almost never set in stone until she begins the process of writing out her thoughts. After writing, Johnson says, “My characters tend to take me where they want to go and I just follow.”
Johnson’s purpose for writing is unlike many other romantic novelists. In a world where many novelists skim over the details, her desire is to “inform, seduce, perhaps even astonish, and even disturb, all with a painter’s eye for atmospheric reality and lyrical detail.” The author’s intention is to create characters that become realistic to her reading audience. She desires to make them so life-like that a reader can hear them breathe.
Susan Johnson finally became published after writing a contemporary based on her personal passions. She purchased a copy of WRITERS MARKET and read an introduction on query letters. Johnson chose three publishers and took the bold step in mailing out the first three chapters of her contemporary piece. The publishers inquired about the complete manuscript however did not buy it. Johnson reacted with thoughts of doubt and discouragement.
Nonetheless, she continued to write another story. In this story she decided to base much of the details on her great-grandmother’s problematic love affair. Despite her relative’s suffering, Johnson changed the course of the story allowing her great-grandmother to enjoy a fictional happy ending. The author stopped at chapter three of her manuscript to mail it to one publisher of the WRITERS MARKET. Johnson wanted to try her hand at getting her work published again. At a time when Playboy Press was one of the largest romance publishers, the publishing company responded by suggesting that an author select a publisher to publish her particular style of writing.
Johnson received a letter from Nancy Coffey requesting to see the rest of her manuscript. The author then left her job as an Art Curator at the University of Minnesota. She went on a three week long long sick leave from the University of Minnesota in order to finish and submit the book.
When Johnson was back at work, she took some time to do some finishing “cleanup work” in order to send in to the Playboy Press. This time Susan Johnson was successful. The publishers purchased the manuscript “Seized By Love” and Johnson has been writing novels ever since.
Susan Johnson has since published multiple novels, many of which she writes under different names. She is the author behind the hit billionaire series named CC Gibbs. In addition, she has written Hot Streak by Jill Barkin. Many of her first books have been re-released under different titles outside of North America. Few of her popular books are:
