About Susan Kaye Quinn

An American author, Susan Kaye Quinn is well known for writing science-fiction and fantasy novels aimed at the Young Adult market. Gifted in creating exciting and compelling stories with something to say, she gets her message across clearly and articulately. Letting her work essentially speak for itself, she really understands the genre that she’s writing within, ultimately giving it a life of its own. Setting herself apart with her work, she sits comfortably within a niche all of her own, being very much an author of her own.

Her work is highly regarded for its imaginative scope and scale, really drawing in a number of different concepts and ideas. Asking some of the more profound and heavier questions, the material never gets weighed down with its own sense of grandiosity. Easy to read and simple to understand, Quinn’s stories really work on a number of different levels, as she transports the reader to far of worlds. It’s a true testament to her skills as a writer that she manages to juggle so many disparate elements seemingly with no difficulty at all.

There are plenty of characters that Quinn has created that have really stood the test of time too, coming alive off of the page. With many of them running over consecutive novels and across entire series, audiences around the world have really taken to her work and writing. Translated worldwide, her work has travelled far and wide, with it being universal in its themes and nature, really appealing to a broad range of readers. There’s a lot more to come in the future too, with plenty more titles on the horizon, as she continues growing upwards and onwards.

Early and Personal Life

Born in Santa Monica, California, in the United States of America, Susan Kaye Quinn grew up writing numerous different stories. This passion of hers would be something that she’d return to time and time again, really honing and refining her craft as a writer. Focusing on the genres of science-fiction and fantasy, she would eventually come to discover her own voice as a novelist in time.

Attending university, she would gain several engineering degrees, along with gaining a PhD, studying aerospace, environmental, and mechanical. Working in a number of different places, she would work in NASA as well as the National Center for Atmospheric Research, designing aircraft engines and looking at global warming. Turning to writing full-time though, she currently still writes to this very day, which she continues to do from her home in the suburbs of Chicago.

Writing Career

It would be back in 2010 that Susan Kaye Quinn would begin her literary career, starting everything off with the novel ‘Life, Liberty, and Pursuit.’ She’d then science-fiction book ‘Open Minds’ in 2011, beginning her first series called ‘Mindjack,’ paving the way for many more to follow. Other series that she would write were titled ‘Mindjack Origins,’ ‘Debt Collector,’ ‘Singularity,’ ‘Dharian Affairs,’ ‘Stories of Singularity,’ and ‘Nothing is Promised’ to name just a few.

Another stand-alone novels she would write was ‘Faery Swap’ in 2013, which would be a fantasy novel aimed at children. Adapting her work for a variety of different mediums, including virtual reality, her writing has been extensively translated. There’s a lot more to follow too, as she continues to write on both a regular and consistent basis, not stopping any time soon.

Broken Wide

Originally coming out back in 2018, this would be the sixth and final title in the ‘Mindjack’ series of much loved novels. Finishing the series, it neatly wraps everything up for the reader, bringing everything in the long-running science-fiction to a conclusion. Continuing the story directly from before, it’s best that the books themselves are read in order, so as to make sense of the series overall.

Previously hiding who he was and what he was capable of, Zeph has mindjack capabilities that he wants to keep covered from dangerous individuals. With everything seeming to come together, including being with the woman he loves, as well as his sister and mother being safe, it’s now a case of bigoted politicians stoking fears against the Jackers. With the Jacker Freedom Alliance coming apart at the seams, all Zeph wants is to break-away with Tessa, but peace doesn’t seem to be an option between Jackers and Mindreaders. Will they manage to restore society, can they find peace together, and what will become of them both as they find that all order is broken wide?

It’s a well told story that really allows the reader to explore its rich and immersive world, taking them on a journey. There’s so much here to enjoy, allowing the audience to get swept up in its gripping and highly entertaining narrative and premise. With strong characters throughout as well, it’s no wonder that this series has been so successful, keeping its audience glued the whole way.

The Last Mystic

First released through the ‘Twisted Space LLC’ publishing label, this was initially published in 2020 on the 7th of January. The fourth title in the ‘Singularity’ series of science-fiction novels, this would carry on directly from the last book, finishing of the series. Again it’s best that the stories are read in order so as to make the most out of the books, along with understanding the leading characters arcs.

Returning from the dead, Eli aims to stop the Ascenders once and for all, with them having blasted him out of the void. A lots happened during the three days of his departure, with the girl he loves now building an army with which she will attack the Ascenders herself. Then there’s the Ascenders themself lining up in formation to create a death cult, all whilst everyone else attempts to become the one that ushers in the Second Singularity. Will they be able to stop the Ascenders, can they fight against all odds, and what will finally become of the last mystic?

Ending the series with style and panache, this is a great conclusion to an equally great series, and one that never misses a beat. There’s so much to uncover here with its multiple layers, making for a great story that really captivates the reader on every single level. It’s a series that definitely needs to be read in order, and it’s also one that can definitely be returned to time after time.
