About Susan Kuklin

Susan Kuklin is an accomplished American photographer and writer best known for her nonfiction books for young adults and children. She has had her photography published in big names like Time, Newsweek, and the New York Times, and she currently resides in New York City with her husband.

Kuklin’s work caught the attention of the world in 1975 when she was assigned to photograph George Balanchine as he rehearsed with the New York City Ballet. Despite the glamorous atmosphere, Kuklin was constantly worried about her work and admits to having once forgotten to put film in the camera.

In 1977, Kuklin was invited by professor Herbert Terrace to take part in a scientific study involving a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky who was being raised like a human child and taught sign language. The project was a success, and Kuklin’s photographs were used in two books, one of which was a children’s book called ‘The Story of Nim,’ written by Anna Michel. This assignment was Kuklin’s introduction to children’s publishing and her work in this field has remained ever since.

Kuklin loves being a nonfiction author, as it has allowed her to spend time with people from all walks of life and given her a front-row seat at the many facets of life. Her work has allowed her to witness the fascinating, infuriating, complicated, and mysterious aspects of life.

Early and Personal Life

Susan Kuklin was born in 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and from a young age had dreams of becoming a prima ballerina. She studied theater at New York University and the Herbert Berghof School and then, while attending NYU graduate school, switched her focus to directing plays. After a move to Knoxville, Tennessee with her soon-to-be husband, Bailey, Kuklin made a commitment to photography as a career and was gifted a Leica camera by Bailey, who used all of his savings to purchase it.

Kuklin’s nonfiction works cover a wide range of topics, from AIDS to poverty and transgender youth. She combines her writing with her photography to create interesting and thought-provoking pieces. Her inspiration comes from the work of photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, with Evans photographing in the same area of Appalachia where Kuklin spent two years trekking, climbing and driving to capture the lives of families.

Kuklin and her husband currently live in New York City, where she continues to produce her works. She has a passion for uncovering stories and bringing them to life through her photographs and writing. Her ability to connect with her subjects is what has made her work so special and powerful.
