Susan Wiggs, an American author, was born in the United States and is known for her historical and contemporary romance novels. Her passion for writing began during her childhood, and by the age of eight, she had completed her first novel, “A Book About Some Bad Kids.” Wiggs is a graduate of Harvard University.
Following her graduation, Wiggs temporarily set aside her dream of becoming a novelist to pursue a career as a math teacher. Despite this shift, she continued to read novels, particularly those in the romance genre. In 1983, after running out of reading material one evening, she began writing once more. Using “A Book About Some Bad Adults” as her working title, she spent three years crafting her first published novel.
In 1987, Zebra Books published Wiggs’ debut novel, “Texas Wildflower,” a Western historical romance. Since then, her contemporary and historical romances have been set in various time periods and locations, often inspired by places she has lived or visited. Wiggs made the transition to full-time writing in 1992.
Over the years, Susan Wiggs has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the romance genre. In 1993, she received the prestigious Romance Writers of America RITA Award for her novel “Lord of the Night.” She was recognized again in 2000 for “The Charm School.” Additionally, Wiggs has won RITA Awards for “The Mistress” (2000) and “Lakeside Cottage” (2006). Romantic Times has twice named her a Career Achievement Award winner.
In addition to her romance novels, Wiggs began writing single-title women’s fiction in 2000. Her first single-title story, “The You I Never Knew,” was published in 2001. Wiggs often connects her stories, allowing her to revisit established characters.
Susan has written the following series:
The Lakeshore Chronicles: Set in the fictional town of Avalon, this series follows the Bellamy family and their friends. Each book focuses on a different character, allowing readers to explore various aspects of Avalon’s community. Some of the series’ standout titles include “Summer at Willow Lake,” “The Winter Lodge,” and “Dockside.”
The Bella Vista Chronicles: Centered around the idyllic Sonoma County, the Bella Vista Chronicles delve into themes of family, friendship, and the power of memories. The series begins with “The Apple Orchard,” in which protagonist Tess Delaney restores stolen treasures to their rightful owners while uncovering her own family’s hidden past. The series continues with “The Beekeeper’s Ball,” following celebrated chef Isabel Johansen as she transforms her childhood home into a destination cooking school and navigates unexpected challenges.
The Chicago Fire Trilogy: Inspired by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, this historical romance series explores the lives of three women who find love amidst the chaos and destruction. Titles in this trilogy include “The Hostage,” “The Mistress,” and “The Firebrand.”
The Calhoun Chronicles: Set in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this series centers on the lives and romances of the Calhoun family. With titles such as “The Charm School,” “The Horsemaster’s Daughter,” and “Halfway to Heaven,” the Calhoun Chronicles transport readers to a time of change and opportunity in America’s history.
The novel The Secrets of Bella Vista was adapted into a TV movie in 2022 starring Rachelle Lefevre and Niall Matter.
Wiggs’ impressive body of work, numerous awards, and dedication to her craft have earned her a lasting legacy in the world of romance literature. With each new novel, she continues to captivate readers with her evocative settings, engaging characters, and emotionally resonant storytelling. As her stories are adapted for television and film, Susan Wiggs’ impact continues to expand, touching the hearts of countless fans worldwide.

I remember reading a book about 2 young girls riding their bikes to Camo Kioga, sneaking out to do so, and very curious to see how the rich folk spent their summers.
I’ve read many of your books, and wish to read that one again. Please let me me know the title so I can order it. Thanks millions!

I researched it and am not seeing any book written by Susan titled “An Ocean Away”. Are you sure you have the title correct? She did write “The Ocean Between Us”.
love The Apple Orchard & The Beekeepers Ball. The ending of the Beekeepers Ball referred to situations indicating another book. I’m wondering why you haven’t written another book in that series?
I just read The Lost and Found Bookstore and Salt and Sugar both included characters from The Apple Orchard. I read all four books after seeing the movie based on the Apple Orchard on the Hallmark Channel.
