Suyi Davies Okngbowa
Suyi Davies was born in the year 1989 in Benin City, Nigeria, where he also grew up. His early life orbited around the University of Benin where both of his parents worked, and then he went on to get a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the same university between 2006 and 2011. Suyi later moved to Niger State, Minna, and lastly to Lagos.
He earned an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Arizona, and he now teaches at the University of Ottawa. He has also taught writing at the University of Arizona as well as lectured and spoken at different venues in the United States and beyond, including conferences, schools, and conventions, as well as other institutions.
Suyi has worked in various fields, like professional services in finance, construction engineering, digital learning in nonprofit, and marketing communications.
Suyi’s work is heavily influenced by the cultures and histories of West Africa and Nigeria, and discusses themes of challenging difference, finding home, and identity.
The first thing that he remembers writing was this retelling of a few stories from the Christian Bible. He found a few of them rather interesting, and thought about what it’d be like to be a fly on the way. So he wrote many of the popular tales from the perspective of the lesser characters. Like the guy that owned the room where the last supper was held or the owner of that donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem. It was fun while it lasted, which wasn’t too long.
“Son of the Storm”, and the “The Nameless Republic” trilogy as a whole, was born out of Suyi’s desire to tell stories which drew on the same ones that he had heard about the history of Benin City as he was growing up there. He realized over time, that there was this shared connectedness between the tales of empires and kingdoms and conquest and trade which orbited around his country, his city, and his continent. And many of those tales had been cut off after some colonial influence. They were wonderfully fantastic in nature already, and it was just a matter of time before they inspired him to write one of his own.
The funnest part of writing the novel was building the world. He had a swell time of asking himself of Oon, the sorts of questions every sort of world builder would: why would they actually do something instead of doing it another way.
He mixed and matched real-life and fictional reasons to answer these questions, so that the line between both ended up getting blurred, which he also enjoyed. He also got to write characters that only show up once or twice yet still spice up the page when they do, like Danso’s triplet uncles, was another fun part.
“David Mogo, Godhunter” won the Nommo Ilube Award for Best Speculative Novel by an African in 2020.
Suyi’s shorter work has appeared in various anthologies and periodicals such as Nightmare, Tor.com, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed, Fireside, and Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy, and they have been nominated for various awards. He has also written as Suyi Davies for younger audiences.
Suyi’s debut novel, called “David Mogo, Godhunter”, was released in the year 2019. He writes science fiction, fantasy, and general speculative work.
“David Mogo, Godhunter” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2019. Nigerian God-Punk: an atmospheric and powerful urban fantasy set in Lagos.
Since the Orisha War which rained thousands of deities down onto the streets of Lagos in an event that came to be known “The Falling”, David Mogo (a demigod), scours Eko’s dank underbelly to earn a living wage as a freelance Godhunter. Despite pulling off his biggest feat to date by capturing a high god for a renowned Eko wizard, he knows his job is just pure bad luck.
He is proved right when the wizard conjures a legion of Taboos, which are feral godling/child hybrids in order to seize Lagos for himself. In order to correct this mistake and keep Lagos standing, he teams with his foster wizard, the high god’s twin sister, and one speech-impaired Muslim teen girl in order to defeat this wizard.
This novel is written like it is a tourist guide of Lagos from a demigod’s eye. It is an action packed depiction of an apocalyptic fall of the gods. The chapters are all short and keep the reader wanting more to keep them reading. The world building and writing style is excellent here with an exciting story being told and some stellar character development. It is a captivating novel, and any readers that enjoy non-Western mythpunk, fantasy, and tales of found family
“Son of the Storm” is the first novel in the “Nameless” series and was released in the year 2021. This is a sweeping story of forgotten magic and violent conquest set in a world that is inspired by the pre-colonial empires of West Africa.
Danso, in the ancient city of Bassa, is a clever scholar on the brink of achieving greatness. Only trouble is, he does not actually want it. Instead, he prefers to chase around forbidden stories of what lies outside of the city walls. The Bassai elite claim there is nothing of interest out there. While the city’s immigrants are sworn to secrecy about it.
However Danso stumbles across this warrior that wields magic that actually should not even exist, he is put on a collision course with some of the darkest secrets in Bassa. Pulled into the history of the city, he sets off on a journey beyond its very borders. And the chaos left in the wake of this discovery threatens to ruin the empire.
This is a fantastical and thrilling adventure which introduces a beguiling new world, and proceeds to rip apart everything that you believe you knew. Suyi, with an irresistible and intricate plot, weaves together a vibrant story of intrigue, revolution, and betrayal. He delivers a mesmerizing coming of age story with masterful and fully realized worldbuilding, thoughtful and piercing interrogations of privilege, power, and all of the facets of human nature, as well as some morally complex characters.
