Suzanne Williams is the author of over 50 children’s books, including the Goddess Girls series, the Heroes in Training series, and the award-winning picture book Library Lil. She grew up in Oregon, and went to college at the University of Oregon, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and masters in Library science. After she finished college, she moved to Washington with her husband. She did not start writing until she had worked ten years as a librarian and got children of her own. She has two children who are adults, and a pet dog named Toby.
“Princess Power” is one of the book series that Suzanne Williams has written. The first book in this series is called “The Perfectly Proper Prince”. After holding the auditions for her talent show, Princess Lysandra discovers three other adventurous princesses with some talents who would love to assist someone, but they instead end up assisting the frog prince. Princess Lysandra does not enjoy sewing, napping or decorating her palace. She finds these activities extremely boring and all she wants is adventure. So when she meets Elena, Fatima and Tansy, this makes her very happy, and they soon embark on their maiden quest.
A princess is always supposed to behave in a royal manner but all that Lysandra wanted was an adventure. So she hosted a talent show in order to get some friends who would join her in the quest for adventure. It was then decided that she and her elder sister would judge the contestants and choose ten finalists. She came up with a plan to pretend to be sick with the plague in order to cancel her talent show. Everyone left apart from three princesses, and they now became the lucky ones to enjoy an adventure with Lysandra.
One of the princesses came flying on a magic carpet, another princess had this magic potion while the third one could play the flute. In order to start their adventure, the princesses flew to a marketplace. When one of them played the flute, they had the ability to hear what humans and animals were thinking. So they heard this voice saying that he used to be a prince but a witch turned him to a frog. He now wanted a kiss from one of these princesses, which would return him into a prince once more.
However, these girls were not interested in kissing the frog, but they decided that Gabriella, who was Lysandra’s sister and an unmarried twenty-five year old princess, would be the perfect person for this. Lysandra and her friends then decided to fly back to her castle and placed the frog on her sister’s bed. They then encouraged Gabriella to kiss this frog because a book that taught courtly manners has suggested it. Since she followed rules all the time, she kissed this frog and Prince Jerome emerged. He then married Gabriella and Lysandra and her friends decided that they could use their gifts to go anywhere or do anything since they now had power, the princess power.
The second book in the Princess Power series is called “The Charmingly Clever Cousin”. In this story, Fatima invites her friends to visit her sister and brother-in-law, Selime and Ahmed. When Ahmed’s father falls ill, the girls sense that something suspicious has happened to him. Ahmed going missing only confirms their suspicions, but the girls also suspect that Ahmed’s cousin might be the one to blame. It is now up to Lysandra and her three friends to solve the mystery and find the villain.
Princess Fatima is a twelve year old girl with almost everything that she could want. She lives in a palace and even has a magic flying carpet. However, not everything in her life is rosy, and her brother-in-law thinks that she is impulsive and irresponsible, and his criticisms only serves to enrage Fatima. Her sister Selime notices her sadness and then realizes that changing the pace might work to make things better. So she suggests that Fatima invites some friends to visit, and she is very happy with this news.
As the girls are sharing secrets and giggling, Fatima notices that there’s a black horse outside her window. This is Yusuf, Ahmed’s cousin paying them a visit. He enchants the girls with his stories about magic tricks and dragons, and his visit changes the mood in the palace, and life is now like a big party. His next visit is a bit different, and Fatima notices that Yusuf is not his usual happy self. He alleges that Ahmed wants him to be in charge at the palace, but the peaceful environment in the palace turns into a place where accusations and strife are starting to emerge.
There is something suspicious that’s going on and the four brave princesses have to find out what is going on. The mystery surrounds the kidnapping of Ahmed and Yusuf’s subsequent redecorating of the palace. The four princesses use a magic carpet in order to discover Yusuf’s plot. As for the characters in this book, we find Ahmed always angry while Selime is a sweet girl. Fatima may be flighty but her heart is in the right place. Yusuf is a smart person but he is also evil. This story does not disappoint and its pace increases towards the end.
More mystery was to follow when Yusuf fired all the servants. The food budget was also slashed, and some of the favorite delicacies in the palace were removed from the menu. To make matters worse, Tansy’s magic flute stopped working. Things became worse when food began disappearing from their kitchen. Ahmed writes a letter using secret code to inform Elena that he’s in danger. In Princess Power number two, we find the personalities of these four princesses beginning to grow, and they are a fabulous foursome to be emulated by all young readers. The cartoon-like illustrations in this book complement its text. For children who enjoy a tantalizing tale, this story will cater to them. The Arabian culture also comes out well in the story, and this book is for everyone who loves some adventure.
