Suzette D. Harrison is an award-winning humor and comedy, romance, and historical fiction author from the West coast.
She jokingly calls her grandmother and mother her first librarians as she used to often ask them to define words for her when she was a child.
As she grew older, her mother often sent her to the dictionary as she intentionally taught her to be comfortable and seek knowledge on her own.
Her grandmother used to spend a lot of time reading, even though she also had the duties and obligations of being a mother, grandmother, friend, and church mother.
One of her fondest memories during this time was of her granny in her favorite chair with a book, while her cousins ran and ripped outside.
Suzette used tO spend much of her time sitting at her grandmother’s feet with her 0wn book. These are some of her most treasured and priceless moments as they were each lost in their literary worlds in quiet contemplation.
Her mother then was a huge fan of cowboy fiction and read all the Zane Grey westerns she could get her hands on while Harrison read about the prairie life from the perspective of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Given her upbringing, reading was something that Suzette D. Harrison did a lot whether it was at a friend’s house, at the public library, or with her grandmother.
Even as she grew to become a teenager, she continued reading all manner of books. Her aunt’s library was at this time her most beloved treasure chest. It was from the library that she discovered “Roots” the American family saga by Alex Haley.
She read the work from cover to cover and several other works such as Mandingo that she is certain her mother did not approve of. As such, her love for reading naturally led her to write as she developed a desire to write her own stories.
In her childhood, she loved creating stories, doodling, and writing poetry. Her first state of getting published was when she was in junior high school.
Several of her works were published in her junior high creative journals and later by the University of California.
She remembers being admitted to college and being at a loss as to what major she should take. She was torn between French and English but when she saw Black Studies, the hesitation vanished.
She said what could be better than studying your culture and history and then writing about it at a later date.
Suzette Harrison has always been one of those authors that can write in all manner of genres. She enjoys writing novels in women’s, children’s, and romance literature. However, African American historical fiction has always been something that was in her heart.
During the time she was studying for her undergraduate degree she was so certain that she was going to major in Black studies. All she wanted to do was write stories that resonated beyond her own experiences and went to the collective history.
This was what kept her going and in 2002 she finally published “Loving on the Edge of Respectability.” She still dedicates herself to writing novels that highlight the diverse and rich history of Black people in all its glory and pain.
She now loves to call herself a wannabe gospel singer, wife, baker, and mother in addition to bestselling author. As a gospel singer, she has been a vocalist on numerous recordings.
The former homeschool teacher and stay-at-home mother remains a voracious reader.
“My Joy” by Suzette Harrison is a compelling story that introduces the commensurate risk-taker – Joy Matthews.
At the opening of the story, she just enrolled in culinary school after leaving her job working for a Fortune 500 company as she wants to chase her dreams.
Joy’s biggest desire is to own a boutique couture cake business and works on this during the day and during the night, she works at The Hourglass. It is an exclusive gentleman’s club where men who enjoy more on a woman’s frame usually congregate.
She is close to making her dream a reality when she has a chance encounter with childhood friend Quinton Daley. They have an instant attraction and this throws a wrench into the once agnostic and relationship-phobic woman.
She is a goal-oriented woman, but in Quinton, she sees a tall, born-again, chocolate-skinned man who she likes a lot. But his faith poss a risk that even Joy thinks is too much to take on.
But he is not one to be fazed and he will patiently wait for Joy to come to him and to God. When lust and love heat up, Quinton and Joy face a predicament. Will they abstain or indulge?
Suzette D Harrison’s novel “Basketball 7 Ballet” introduces Yazmeen Williams a church administrative and professional dancer. In addition to this, she is also the mother to two three-year-olds and hence could not have been busier.
She has never been interested in love ever since she left her monster husband who was a threat to herself and her children. But then she meets Tavarez Alvarez the former NBA player and finds him utterly orgasmic.
But still, she is a woman that will need him to earn her trust which will be hard as even getting her number will be an uphill task. Tavarez has a reputation as a player but no relationships. But he recently got married again and wants to settle down.
He is a venture capitalist who spends much of his free time taking care of his five-year-old daughter. Yazmeen seems like a delicious distraction but she seems uninterested in him.
He will need to work very hard to get her to trust him at a time when he is also dealing with some hilarious drama caused by his baby mama.
Suzette D. Harrison’s novel Living on the Edge of Respectability tells the story of Chris McCullen, Reina Kingsley, and Vanessa Taylor who have been friends since they met at the University of California Berkeley.
At the opening of the story, they have become well-respected, capable and confident professionals. However, all of them feel that something is missing from their lives.
Vanessa is a television executive that was once upon a time an abandoned and angry foster child. She is now past the anger but things get very heated when she starts the search for her birth parents.
Reina is a half Puerto Rican and half Jamaican woman who has been having a lot of success as a singer but needs freedom from her obese body and the control of her very traditional parents.
Chris is a handsome fitness instructor who seems to have everything from designer clothes, to a flashy car and a great and fun job. But he does not have love and is yet to get over the mysterious death of his mother.
Their reckless search for long-buried secrets and independence takes them on a journey that is both life-affirming and troubling.
