Sylvia Mercedes
Author Sylvia Mercedes makes her home in idyllic North Carolina countryside with her many children, handsome husband, and Gummy Bear the Toothless Wonder Cat.

When she’s not writing she is running around trying to catch her little girl, cleaning glitter up, attempting to plan out healthy-ish meals, and wondering where she put her phone. And in between all that, she reads a healthy diet of fantasy books. Mainly, however, she’s writing.

After having a short career in traditional publishing (under a different name), she decided she’d take the plunge into the indie publishing world and has been enjoying every moment of it.

“Daughter of Shades” is the first novel in the “Venatrix Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2019. A rival with a secret, a huntress without a past, and a kingdom’s fate hanging in the balance.

Ayleth and her shade move like one, always hungry for the hunt. Under her mentor’s tight control, she fears that her memories are getting stolen from her. Now at nineteen, apprenticed for as long as she can remember to the mysterious Holy Order, she desires to rise through the ranks and banish the untamed spirits for the prophesied Golden Prince.

When the shadowy threats descend on the crown, Ayleth seizes the once-in-a-lifetime chance to prove her worth in this one open competition. Looking to win the prince’s favor and escape from her scheming mentor, she resolves to hold her own against an arrogant and handsome opponent, named Terryn, who might prove to be more than a match for her untested powers.

However while these two rivals follow a trail beyond the Great Barrier and confront the legendary evil, the stolen secrets of Ayleth’s past could return and haunt her. Can Ayleth win this trial and reclaim her true self? Will she even survive through her first day?

This is an interesting start to a new saga that is set in a richly built and dark world which had some fairy tale references. The novel is thrilling, captivating, and entirely mesmerizing read, while the story is fantastic with some lovable and awesome characters.

“Visions of Fate” is the second novel in the “Venatrix Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2019. The hunt is on, but who’s hunter and who’s the hunted?

Terryn and Ayleth survived through the Witchwood, however they aren’t any closer to solving the mystery about the dead shade hunter. In their quest to get answers, they learn about a witch escaping through the Great Barrier and leaving behind a trail of corpses. A murderous witch is just one of Ayleth’s issues though. Terryn, her intriguing and infuriating rival, is going to give his all in order to win their competition. And Kephan, their Outpost Master, conceals more than just one dangerous secret.

Worst of all, as he was pursuing a lead, he finds herself on the hunt for a three year old girl, one that is possessed by a powerful and unique shade. All of a sudden, Ayleth has to question the teachings of her Holy Order. Is it always right to murder humans possessed by shades? Even a kid?

Mercedes uses words that conjure up all sorts of things in your imagination, and you feel everything that Terryn and Ayleth are going through. She delivers a sequel that is a great continuation of this story. This is another exciting and brilliant novel, that makes you keep your bum of the edge of your seat all the way through.

“Paths of Malice” is the third novel in the “Venatrix Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2019. Trapped and poisoned. And at the mercy of a ghost. She can handle all of this.

Ayleth, one month into her competition with Venator Terryn, seems to be no closer to winning the Golden Prince’s trust. Why else call on Terryn to serve at the castle on a secret mission, leaving her to manage the borough all on her own? Doesn’t matter. She will prove her worth to the prince come whatever may. Enough mysterious plague the land under her protection, including the mystery behind Terryn himself and the odd and dangerous talisman that he’s kept hidden in his room.

Her quest to find answers quickly sees her on the trail of her most lethal foe to date. A ghost from the prince’s past has come back to haunt the present, now possessed of a powerful phantom shade that is capable of walking the darker paths of the Haunts. Ayleth is wholly unprepared and outmatched to face an enemy like this all alone. However when has she ever before backed down from a fight?

These books get more raw, grittier, and grimmer with each book. The plotlines get further tangled, and secrets get clearer.

“Thief” is the first novel in the “Scarred Mage of Roseward” series and was released in the year 2020. A disfigured mage, a clever thief, and a kiss of poison.

Nelle longs for nothing more than to just leave her thieving ways behind and pursue a life of honest work. However her dad lands himself in debt up to his neck, she has to take a dangerous job on if she is to save his life, and it’s a job that takes her to shores of Roseward Isle.

Soran Silveri has battled to suppress the nightmarish monster that stalks Roseward for fifteen years now. His weapons are running low, and the curse put on him cripples his formerly unmatched power. Isolation has pushed him right to the brink of madness, and he knows that he will not be able to hang on for much longer.

When the undeniably beautiful, sharp-tongued, and uncouth young woman arrives on his shore, he resolves to drive her away, not wanting to be responsible for another death. However she’s just as determined not to get frightened off by this hideously scarred mage. Not until she gets what she came for.

Can these two outcasts thrown together in this tangle of lies learn that they are the other’s only hope? Or is the haunted darkness of Roseward going to rip them apart?
