T.B. Markinson is an American author of gay and lesbian romance novels. She returned to the United States after spending seven years in the UK and Ireland. When not writing, you will find her travelling around the world, visiting pubs in New England, watching sports on television, or reading. Markinson’s books have hit Amazon bestselling lists in the lesbian fiction and romance.
The AM Show is a 2021 T.B. Markinson’s standalone novel written in collaboration with Miranda MacLeod.
T.B. Markinson and Miranda MacLeod form an impressive duo. They have crafted captivating stories filled with characters that are flawed, funny, and incredibly easy to fall in love with.
The book introduces us to Amanda Morgan. She has been the popular host of New York’s “The AM Show” for many years. This morning TV show mixes serious news with entertainment and thus it’s a hit with viewers. Amanda has her eyes set on a bigger prize – the evening news slot she’s been promised for so long. However, the entrenched sexism of the corporate world has kept her from advancing. With rumors swirling that she might be ousted, Amanda is ready to battle for her place. With support from a surprising ally, she’s determined to showcase the strength of women.
In a different part of the country, Dakota is making her mark on morning TV with the “Cock-a-doodle Rooster Report.” This show has a more rural flavor but shares the morning slot with Amanda’s program. For Dakota, Amanda Morgan isn’t just a colleague in the same industry; she’s a hero and the person Dakota admires most in the world.
Amanda unknowingly shares a passionate night with Dakota. She’s unaware that Dakota is not only familiar with her industry but knows exactly who Amanda is. After finding out Dakota’s identity, Amanda feels deceived and vows revenge. However, the unpredictable nature of their careers and an unexpected twist of fate draw Amanda and Dakota into each other’s paths again. They must navigate this complex situation carefully to avoid a disastrous clash.
The charm of Markinson and MacLeod stories lies in their characters. The cast comprises of beautifully flawed and richly detailed characters. For instance, Amanda always appears flawless on the Morning Show, skillfully assists her co-host with his on-air slip-ups. Yet, off-camera, she battles personal insecurities and challenges that her viewers would never guess. On the other hand, Dakota is known for her endearing awkwardness and occasional blunders, especially when interacting with Amanda, whom she admires greatly. Her habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time adds to her charm. These intricate character details draw readers in and allow them feel connected to Amanda and Dakota as they learn more about their lives and witness their growth.
The connection between the two main characters is unmistakable. Their thoughts about possibly being together are both touching and funny. The story flows smoothly and is enriched with humor which is a hallmark when these two authors team up. Markinson’s uniquely added elements of mystery, tension, and jealousy among colleagues which add depth to the narrative. Often, support comes from unexpected places and that highlights the power and capabilities of women to reach their objectives.
This story is an age-gap romance set in the workplace. It’s the fourth collaboration between Miranda MacLeod and TB Markinson. The narrative alternates between the viewpoints of both main characters, placing readers in a prime position to see the challenges they face and the achievements they can unlock together.
The writing styles of MacLeod and Markinson complement each other perfectly and this unique blend allows them to create stories that are entertaining, romantic, and steamy. For anyone in search of engaging and enjoyable novel, then the AM Show is a highly recommended read.
The Chosen One is the first novel in a series by the same name. It captures the essence of young love and the complexities of family expectations beautifully. It tells the story of two girls from distinct backgrounds, each striving for a semblance of normalcy in lives far from their control. The narrative is filled with humor, yet it doesn’t shy away from the challenges that come with living in the limelight or the struggles of maintaining secrecy for those who wish to stay out of it.
One of the main characters is the 18 years old Ainsley. The weight of the expectations she has faced from a young age has forced her to mature faster than her peer’s entering university.
Then there is Maya another freshman at 21. She has similarly been aged beyond her years thanks to life’s dramas which has contributed to her mature outlook.
The story unfolds from Ainsley’s perspective, allowing us to discover the enigmatic and mysterious Maya, aka Maya the Gray. Alongside Ainsley, we meet her cousin Fiona, who is both comically quirky and fiercely loyal, and Fiona’s boyfriend, Pat, a doctor with a penchant for heavy drinking and a rollercoaster relationship with Fiona.
Ainsley and Maya experience immediate attraction and desire for each other from the start. However, their families different backgrounds pose a challenge to their growing relationship. Ainsley’s family has been in the United States since 1652, starting with an ancestor who, despite initially being an indentured servant from Scotland, saw his descendants rise to prominence in the American political scene. Ainsley is seen as “The Chosen One,” with high expectations placed upon her. Maya comes from a mixed-race background with limited financial resources, which Ainsley’s mother and grandmother view with contempt. Maya feels the weight of her ancestors’ history of slavery daily, a past that contrasts starkly with how the Carmichaels are perceived.
Despite these differences, Ainsley is unaffected by their racial and financial disparities. But Maya and her mother harbor a secret history and this add a layer of intrigue to their relationship. Having been hurt by a betrayal before, Ainsley finds herself driven to uncover Maya’s secret. This journey forces both Ainsley and Maya to confront the importance of trust in their relationship, alongside their feelings of attraction and fondness for each other.
The Chosen One is a heartwarming tale of young romance set in the midst of family pressures, political aspirations, and the challenges of a relationship between partners of different racial and economic backgrounds. The main characters are endearing and relatable. They’re not without flaws, but their kindness and sense of humor make them incredibly likable. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys a good love story mingled with a bit of political drama.
