Temperance Brennan or ‘Tempe’ as she is often called as, is the name of the famous fictional character developed by the well known anthropologist-turned-author from North Carolina, United States, Kathy Reichs. Tempe is also an anthropologist by profession, like the author and is also based in North Carolina. The character of Temperance Brennan has been adapted as the main character of the television show ‘Bones’ produced by the Fox Television. The role of Temperance of Brennan is played by Emily Deschanel. The novel character of Temperance is depicted as working in Montreal by the author and loosely resembles her, whereas the character from the television show is based more on the life of the author and depicts the younger version of her, working in Washington D.C. She is described as a little bit more socially awkward in the television show. The Temperance Brennan, forensic thriller series consists of a total of 16 novels written by the author Kathy Reichs. The novels have been published between the years 1997 and 2015. The television show based on the character of Temperance Brennan is produced by the author Kathy herself. The full name of Tempe is Temperance Deassee Brennan and is the main protagonist of the crime series. The author Kathy Reichs has introduced Tempe in the first novel of the series, Deja Dead and has written all the novels of the series in first person directly from the viewpoint of Tempe. She has been described by the author as stressing on the importance of the right crime scene processes. As a forensic anthropologist, Tempe investigates the human dead bodies at the crime scenes. She usually deals with the kind of dead bodies, which are difficult to examine and are too degraded because of the manner in which they have been murdered. Mostly, the degradation of the dead bodies is due to advanced decomposition, mutilation or arson. Tempe has been depicted in the novel series as a native of Chicago, who grew up in North Carolina. She is a distinguished anthropologist and represents herself as one of the only 50 board-certified forensic expert in North America.

As the series progresses, the readers come to know more about the family connections and the past life of Temperance Brennan. In the first novel of the series, it is revealed that Tempe has left her husband Janis Peterson. She has been addicted to alcoholism all through her life and has overcome the addiction after a lifelong struggle. In order to stay sober, she drinks Diet Coke very often whenever she feels the craving for alcohol. She also tries Perrier water occasionally. In the later part of the series, it is seen that Tempe joins a medical laboratory as a forensic anthropologist in Quebec, Montreal, Canada. Tempe manages her time between teaching at the North Carolina University in Charlotte and giving suggestions on crime scenes as a forensic expert in Montreal. She spends an equal amount of time of the year in both the countries. In her family, Tempe has a daughter named Katy, who studies in college. She also has a younger sister named Harriet or Harry as she is often called. Harry has a son named Kit. All the three characters featured frequently in the novels written by author Kathy Reichs and her son Brendan Reichs. The character named Tory Brennan, who is Kit’s daughter is featured in the series of novels named ‘Virals’ written by the mother-son pair of authors. Tempe has a cat named Birdie, who accompanies her very often on her journeys between Charlotte and Montreal. Tempe developed the feelings of love for a short period of time towards a detective named Andrew Ryan. The two share a cockatiel in Montreal, which has the name Charlie. Tempe’s husband also has a dog named Boyd, who lives along with Tempe and is often left in Charlotte with her.

The first novel of the Temperance Brennan series was published in the year 1997 under the title ‘Deja Dead’. The novel was published by the Pocket Books publishing house and revolves around the lives of the central characters named Temperance ‘Tempe’ Brennan, Pierre Lamanche, Andrew Ryan and Luc Claudel. The novel is set in Montreal during the time of the year 1994. The plot of the novel opens up with the introduction of Temperance Brennan as a forensic anthropologist. She is depicted as a dedicated anthropologist, who strives hard to solve the crimes in the city. She has left her husband and her past life in North Carolina and now devotes all her time to bring the criminals to justice by working as a forensics expert. She makes her weekend plans for exploring Quebec in order to get some free time away from work. In the first case that she is asked to investigate, she comes around a female corpse, which is brutally dismembered and thrown in trash bags. Tempe begins her investigation into the case and detects a common pattern that the killer uses to kill other victims as well. She sets herself off in search of the killer based on her investigations. However, she risks the lives of the ones who are closest to her by indulging into the investigation. The killer poses a grave danger to the lives of Tempe’s daughter and her best friend. She could not risk losing them, but does not intend to let go the killer so easily.

The second novel of the Temperance Brennan series was published in the year 1999 by the Pocket Books publishing house. The novel was titled ‘Death du Jour’ and deals with the lives of the main characters Temperance Brennan and Andrew Ryan. The plot of the novel is set in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. The plot of the novel opens up with the introduction of Temperance Brennan as a forensic anthropologist in Montreal, Quebec. Tempe finds the dead body of a nun named Sister Elisabeth Nicolet, who had been dead for more than 100 years. The corpse of the Sister Nicolet is found buried in a small coffin in the recesses of an old church. The coffin appears to a strange one to Tempe as she uncovers the first clue related to the murder of the nun. The investigation of the death of Sister Nicolet takes Tempe to a number of dead bodies which are discovered one after the other. Tempe is joined by Detective Andrew Ryan in her investigation. The investigation leads them into the worlds of a controversial and enigmatic professor, a primate colony and a mysterious commune on a Carolina island.
