Terry Deary
Terry Deary was born in Sunderland, England in the year 1946. He is a former museum manager, theater director, and actor. He has written for radio, tv, movies, new media, and theater.

His dad (Billy) worked as a butcher in Hendon, Sunderland, and his mom (Freda) worked managing a clothing shop. As a child, Terry worked for many years in his dad’s butcher shop. It was better than going to school, where he was bullied, beaten, and abused by the loathsome instructors.

After his bad experiences in school, he has stated his dislike for schooling. Terry has stated they are no longer relevant in the 21st century. He has said that testing that all he learned was how to pass the 11-plus, and that it is the death of education.

He later joined the electricity board as a management trainee at the age of eighteen and in the year 1972, joined the Theatre Powys drama company, touring Welsh village halls to bring the theatre to kids. He qualified as an instructor at the Sunderland’s College of Education and taught drama.

As an actor with Theatre Powys, Terry started writing scripts for a few of the shows. One of his most successful was for a children’s show titled “The Custard Kid”. The tour had ended, but Terry wanted to keep the exciting story he had created so he adapted into a collection of Theatre-in-Education projects. Then it was adapted into his first kid’s novel, published as “Custard Kid” in the year 1977.

During his spare time, Terry is a road runner with the Derwentside Athletic Club and takes part in the races from three miles up to the Great Run 13.1 miles, something he has done a total of 21 times.

In the year 1976, he began writing, before becoming a full-time writer in the year 1994, when he started publishing the “Horrible Histories” series.

These books are popular among kids for interesting detail, humorous pictures, and vast information. Among adults they are popular for getting kids interested in history.

In the year 2002, CBBC Television launched a television series based off of “Horrible Histories” which has gone on to win many RTS and Children’s BAFTA awards. In 2011 and 2012, the television series won for best sketch show from British Comedy Award, and was the first children’s program to win a Comedy Award.

Terry’s books have sold more than 25 million copies in more than forty languages.

Since the year 1994, he has been one of the best selling authors in all of Britain. In the year 2012, he was the tenth most-borrowed author in British libraries, and was also voted as the Outstanding Children’s Non-Fiction Author of the 20th Century by Books for Keeps magazine.

Terry’s books are sold in 38 languages in China, Russia, Scandinavia, and Brazil. His work is aimed at children and teenagers. After 35 years, he quit writing children’s books in the year 2011.

“Put Out the Light” won the Sheffield Books award and was nominated for a prestigious Carnegie Medal.

“True Monster Stories” is the first novel in the “True Stories” series and was released in the year 1992. Impossible? Incredible? Too horrible to even imagine? “The Fire Thief” is the first novel in the “The Fire Thief” series and was released in the year 2005. To escape the revenge of the gods, Prometheus travels back in time to 1858 in Eden City. There, he makes a friend in an actor, young orphan, and petty criminal.

Jim runs into trouble with the law, Prometheus becomes torn. Should he use his powers to bail his friend out of trouble, he is going to betray his hiding place to the gods.

Readers found this to be a rollicking blend of narrative tradition, anarchy, and action, as well as being packed with all kinds of puns, sarcastic footnotes, and wisecracking gods. The characters never fail to amuse and the book moves at a nice quick pace.

“Dangerous Days in Ancient Egypt” is the first novel in the “The Fire Thief” series and was released in the year 2016. Think that Ancient Egypt is nothing but a load of ancient obelisks? Do not bet your afterlife on it.

Ancient Egypt should be more than dead than a lot of our yesterdays. After all it was at its height some five thousand years prior. We do still ponder about the pyramids and marvel at all the mummies. It is rather easy to forget about these people actually living, breathing, and loving, though not for too long.

These were some dangerous days for peasants and princes alike. In Ancient Egypt, a world of woes and wars, plagues and poverty, life was pretty short. Forty was a good age to reach. A Pharaoh that was eaten by a hippo wound up just as dead as a ditch digger that got stung by a scorpion. Unwrap all of the bandages and you are going to find that the Egyptians’ odd adventures in life were just every bit as fascinating as the monuments they left to their deaths.

Terry delivers a fun, dangerously witty, and interesting read. He also concentrates on the horrible tiny details that serve to bring the past to life. The book does a great job of teaching the reader, while entertaining them at the same time.
