Terry Mixon is a Texan science fiction author best known for the “Empire of Bones Saga” series. He loves to describe himself as a middle-aged guy that works as computer support for flight controllers at the Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center. His job includes ensuring that the people supporting manned space flights have everything they need to monitor the critical aspects of the operation of the International Space Station. Before he started working for the Space Center, he served in the US Army as a non commissioned officer during the 1980s. As a member of the 101st Airborne, he was a scout and helicopter crew chief of the hunter-killer teams. Mixon flew and performed maintenance for the helicopter that found targets for the aircraft. Unlike other authors who know they are destined for a career in writing from a very young age, he decided to become a professional author very late in life. It was not until he was in his forties that he began writing though he had been a voracious reader before that. Whenever he read a bad novel, he always told himself that he could have down better and finally decided to write his own novels. It all started when a friend of his sent him a draft of a story he was working on and this gave him the motivation to do something too. Terry published his debut novel “Empire of Bones” the first of the “Empire of Bones Saga” in 2014 and has been publishing since.
The first thing Terry first wrote was a short story that sold on the first submission. Once he sold that first story, he did his research into emerging trends in fiction and rather than go the traditional publishing route decided to go Indie. Mixon then published about six titles in the erotic genre under a pseudonym on sites such as Literotica and storiesonline.net. While those early novels were cringeworthy, they were significant in that they helped him learn the writing craft. While he was just a beginner, most of the stories he wrote went on to become very popular. It was from such stories that he got the confidence to go into the writing of science fiction. So far, the Indie route has been successful for the author who now has bestselling titles in several series such as the “Empire of Bones Saga,” “Humanity Unlimited Saga,” “Fractured Republic Saga,” “Vigilante,” “Scorched Earth Saga,” and the “Imperial Marines” series. He has asserted that many of the challenges he has faced have been on the business side of publishing. With his wife’s support and business background, he has been able to learn how to create interesting covers, write interesting blurbs, and format books which he uploads on several platforms. Terry has also learned a lot from attending the Dean Wesley Smith workshops in Oregon, where he got to associate with established authors that know the ins and outs of authoring and publishing.
Terry Mixon’s “Empire of Bones” is a thrilling story that is set in a distant part of the galaxy where the old empire is dead even though a few survivors still cling on to life. The remnant is doing fine as they slowly rebuild their civilization though they are presently a shadow of what they were. Jared had been lost and joined the Navy to make something of his life. He never thought in a million years that he was the Emperor’s bastard until the genetic test required of recruits proved it so. While all he wanted was to become an exceptional officer, he is now forced to involve himself in power politics. His career is also moving along at a snail’s pace given that his superiors do not want to be seen as showing any favoritism to the Emperor’s son. Meanwhile, Kelsey the Princess is a girl that has never been out of the palace. She wants to contribute to the empire and signs up for an exploration mission as a diplomatic aid. Jared her half brother leads the mission and needless to say things between them are awkward. The royal scion and royal bastard now have to work towards a common goal and they have to work closely together given that their mission is about to have a lot of complications. They will come into the path of an unstable wormhole that will change their lives forever and force them to rely on each other for survival.
“Veil of Shadows” the second novel of “The Empire of Bones Saga” by Terry Mixon continues from where the debut left off. Kelsey and Jared have made new enemies and friends. The Old Empire had left behind a lot of technology and they have a lot to learn about the technologies from their friends. Much of the technology is inside Kelsey the Princess and she has struggled to deal with it. In a quest to try to deal with it, she keeps breaking things which soon becomes very expensive. Meanwhile, their enemies are making plans to bring them down. They may have to go on a mission to a nearby galaxy and since they control the skies, they can go anywhere they wish. But given that they are yet to have full control of the planet, they are still vulnerable to the schemes of the Rebel Empire. Things become even more complicated when the enemies come for them and it is up to Jared and Kelsey to stop them before they threaten the lives of their friends. The galaxy needs them to put their best feet forward since their enemies are not playing games.
In Terry Mixon’s “Command Decisions,” Princess Kelsey and Commander Jared are still working on disrupting the plans of their enemies even as they try to get back home. They are initially successful though the entry of Captain Breckenridge puts a damper on their plans. He is a ridiculous bigoted, egotistical, and stupid man who does not have any redeeming qualities or competence. Given his bigoted outlook in life, he refuses to follow the plans that his superiors had concocted and disobeys all orders from the Princess. His actions result in a monumental disaster that happens at the worst moment. The overall target objective is now out of reach even as thousands of lives of his crew are lost. Fortunately, he is just as screwed up by his incompetence just as he manages to screw up everybody else. Unfortunately, it is now up to Kelsey and Jared to salvage the situation even though he is more likely than not to end up in court-martial.
