Even though the character of Ava has been portrayed as disgusting and scary in certain movies, author Brown has successfully changed her into someone that the readers cheer for and care about. The character is highly appreciated in spite of being a ghoul. Other than the characterization of Ava, the readers also liked the way the author has done her pairing with a human. Ava is depicted as a paranormal creature, who tries to live a simple and normal life.

The pace of the story begins to pick up after the story’s first chapter. All in all, the book is seen as a pure fun of urban fantasy.
