The That Ghoul Ava series is a new novel series based on the humor, fantasy, adult, paranormal, fiction, and horror genres. It is written by a well known American author named T.W. Brown. Before writing this series, author Brown successfully wrote a few other popular series. After achieving a lot of name and fame from his previous novels, author Brown decided to try his hand in writing a new genre of the book series. And eventually, he came up with an exciting new story, which became the first book called That Ghoul Ava. This comedy/horror series is comprised of only one novel so far. Author Brown is currently busy in developing a few more books in this particular series. The debut novel of the series was released in the year 2012 by the May December publishers. It is entitled ‘That Ghoul Ava’. The book appears to be very funny, thoughtful, creative, and filled with numerous paranormal mentions. Author Brown has introduced the main character of the series as Ava. She is described as a person with a lot of softness in her behavior.
Even though the character of Ava has been portrayed as disgusting and scary in certain movies, author Brown has successfully changed her into someone that the readers cheer for and care about. The character is highly appreciated in spite of being a ghoul. Other than the characterization of Ava, the readers also liked the way the author has done her pairing with a human. Ava is depicted as a paranormal creature, who tries to live a simple and normal life.
She understands who she is, very well. However, she does not like to follow the usual path of destruction, terror, and death. Ava takes the decision of making her own path and stepping away from the stereotypes. The readers have known author Brown for a long time before this series, and so they were familiar with his writing style. And subsequently, they did not feel disappointed at any point after trying this series. In fact, many readers have praised author Brown, saying that there were numerous places in the plot where they had chills and laughs. With Ava’s character, Todd Brown has introduced to the world a new and intriguing undead character that feels just like being at home within the witty stories of author Brown. Even the comedy aspects of the book’s story are nice. There is a certain purposely included pace change in this particular novel as compared to a majority of other horror novels out in the market.
The story appears to be pretty short. Many critics like to describe the series as simply delightful. The only form of criticism that this book faces is that the writer kept it too short. Everyone who read the book felt that the plot should have been extended somewhat more by the author. The interest of reading the series’ first book piqued for many readers after there were told that they would enjoy the storyline and Ava’s character even more if they were the fans of the Queen Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson. This suggestion was proved to be spot on as it turned out that the readers indeed enjoyed everything in the book very much. Ava looks like a quirky girl with somewhat snarky personality. A couple of elements of her character are such that they make the reading experience of the readers quite exceptional.
One factor is that in spite of being the member of a supernatural community, the character is penned with a lot of humility. The second element that made the readers too interested in the story is that Ava’s character shows a lot of similarities with the popular characters of Betsy Sinclair by Davidson and the sassy succubus Georgina Kncaid by Richelle Mead. The narration of Ava’s story is both engaging and captivating. She has a vampire nemesis if the name of Belinda and seems to have every quality that is expected from a bloodsucking creature. Belinda is not only pretentious, but also stuck up. Even the performance of the narrator named Celia Aurora is quite good. If not the best, it was not even the worst performance by a narrator. Initially, the narration began in a little bit sluggish way, but then turned into an interesting narration as the story progressed further. The pace of the story begins to pick up after the story’s first chapter. All in all, the book is seen as a pure fun of urban fantasy.
A number of readers from all over the world came forward and congratulated author Brown for coming up with such a unique story. After getting the tremendous reviews and the five star rating, author Brown felt like he has been acknowledged for his experiment with a new genre. This boosted his confidence and gave him the strength and courage to try and write several other stories revolving around the life of Ava and the vampire nemesis Belinda. Following the immense success of the debut book of the series, a vast number of readers have decided to keep a track of author Brown’s releases so that they can get their hands on the latest publishing of the series as soon as it is released. Now that the series has become so much famous, many readers fear that the newer books might get sold out just after their arrival in the bookstores.
So, they do not want to lose the opportunity of reading another masterpiece by Todd Brown or wait for even a small amount of time to cherish Brown’s interesting new story. It is believed about the debut novel that the central character, Ava, alone has the sustainability to keep the story and herself in the race of the top league players of the genre of urban fantasy. The book’s horror elements appears like a combination of dark comedy and action adventure. Several critics have reviewed the book by saying that the novel’s horror is just a section of the decor, similar to that of the zombie-comedies.
The only difference is that in author Brown’s description, the supernatural element presents itself as psychics, ghouls, vampires, and revenants. Ava has a youthful silliness in her that makes her stand out among the vampire characters. Her silliness and youthfulness has helped to add to the book’s humor element, which carries forward very nicely till the story’s climax.
