The “Mysteries of Max” series are a set of popular mystery fiction novels by bestselling authors Nic Saint. Nic Saint happens to be the pseudonym for the married writing duo of Nicole and Nick Saint.
Together, the two have written more than fifty novels in several genres that include mystery, romance, cozy, cat sleuth, comedy, suspense and middle grade novels. While they have become notable authors in such a short time, they do not have a background or education in creative fiction writing.
Nicole started out as an accountant while Nick studied political science in college. Before he was struck by the writing bug, he worked all manner of jobs including across Europe, North America and Asia. He was a Berlitz teacher in Belgium, managed a restaurant in India, gardener in Italy and massage therapist in Mexico.
Nicole and Nic Saint currently make their home in a small village in the middle of nowhere from where they write their blockbuster novels. They love to spend time together and when they are not writing they can be found watching Christmas themed Hallmark movies in season and out of season.
They also love to spoil themselves with Tommy, their pet tomcat, curl up with a good comic book, go for a run, watch British crime dramas, twist themselves into a pretzel while doing yoga, sample pastries, chocolate and pasta.
The “Mysteries of Max” by Nic Saint is an excellent set of mystery fiction that features a lovable reporter who owns a sleuthing cat. Max the cat to all appearances seems like an ordinary orange cat though he is special.
He can communicate with Odelia Poole, his human owner who is a correspondent for the Hampton Cove Gazette. The cat is also known to take a very keen interest in the happenings and people in the small town.
In the debut novel of the series, a new police officer moves into town having been hired by the sheriff. The man does not get along with Odelia and Max and they too do not like him and his cat. But they come together to solve a murder mystery and it is not long before they are fast friends.
In the second novel of the series, Odelia starts to see past the rough edges of the new cop to the good man he is underneath. As such when an aging rockstar is the victim of a homicide, they come together to resolve the complex case.
In the third novel of the series, Max and friends come back but this time are unable to move forward with their case. Max teams up with Brutus, his rival and after spending a few hours lounging on a tree they become the best of friends. Ultimately, both Odelia and Max figure out who the killer is.
“Purrfect Murder” is the first novel of The “Mysteries of Max” series that introduces our favorite protagonist. While he looks like your everyday cat, Max the feline can communicate with Odelia Poole, his human owner who reports for the Hampton Cove Gazette.
The tabby is always interested in the happenings in their small town and can often be found snooping with the help of his friends. These are a gorgeous white Persian named Harriet, and a ragamuffin named Dooley.
They make regular trips to the police station, the doctor’s office and the barber shop where they glean exclusive and precious scoops that they then share with Odelia. Things get interesting when the body of a bestselling author is found dumped in an outhouse on Long Island.
A new coop has been sent in to investigate and it does seem like things will never be the same again in Hampton Cove. The new cop is Detective Chase Kingley, who does take kindly to reporters interviewing his suspects or snooping around, which is something Odelia loves to do.
What makes things even worse for Odelia is that he has Brutus, a black cat that is just as standoffish as his owner and strict in laying down the law. He soon starts restricting access to the police station but he is also keen on seducing Harriet which threatens to break up the band.
“Purrfectly Deadly,” the second novel of “The Mysteries of Max” series by Nic Saint, opens to the body of John Paul George, a pop star legend from the eighties being found floating in his pool.
Max, who is the best sleuth in Hampton Cove gets to work alongside his feline friends. Soon they stumble upon several clues and chase down leads helping Odelia Poole, the Hampton Cove Gazette reporter, to resolve the mysterious homicide.
In the meantime, Chase Kingsley the detective is dealing with his own problems. A scandal that he believed was well in his past has come back to haunt him and could just get him fired from the police.
Even though Chase and Odelia have always been at odds, she decides to assist the man in clearing his name even if that would mean Brutus, his cat who is Max’s worst nemesis, gets to stay in town.
It is not long before Max is whisker deep in disgruntled ex wives, boy toys and drug dealers as he competes with his nemesis to be declared the the one and only true detective in Hampton Cove.
Will they manage to save Chase while resolving the complex murder case?
In “Purrfect Revenge,” the third of “The Mysteries of Max” series, Dooley the ragamuffin and Max the blorange tabby are working on a new case. A reality TV star known across the globe had been found killed in his own home and the police think it could have something to do with terror.
In the meantime, The Kenspeckles who have made a name for their very popular reality show are in town where they intend to film something novel. This means there are all manner of reporters in town and the homicide soon turns into a media circus as the Kenspeckles insist on inserting themselves into the investigation.
Hampton Cove’s premier reporter Odelia Poole has teamed up with her nemesis Detective Chase Kingsley to investigate the case. But now that the case has become part of a reality show, they are not making a lot of progress.
The silver lining is that Dooley and Max and their cats are sneaking around hunting clues, tracking leads undetected. But first they have to deal with Kane who is the French Bulldog that belongs to Shane that might have some information critical to cracking the case wide open.
They also have to outsmart Brutus, the black tabby who is also looking for the killer but for his own reasons.
How do they write so many, so fast? Are there just two of them?
I enjoy these Max books.. I try to get through a book a month, as I still work and have family of 8 cats and husband .. so I take 30 minutes of reading my quiet time.. before the day get started
I have read all 65 mysteries of max books and love them. I can hardly wait until you both create number 66 and so on. I’m 76 years old and read a book about every two to three days in between Hallmark movies. Yes, this guy is also a fan. Keep up the great work.
Absolutely love this series. I’m buying all the paperbacks. Is the last paperback volume 58. If so can’t find it.
Have read most up through Purrfect Pills. And most of them I have read twice. Enjoyed both times.
Good laughs along with mystery.
