Path of Ascension (Series by C. Mantis)
C. Mantis writes the “Path of Ascension” series. They are a mix of Xianxia and LitRPG. It is like a car that looks like a LitRPG with skills and dungeons, however the engine and interior are totally Xianxia.

It features a progression system and magic system which are internally and logically consistent, as well as realistic fight scenes and a rational MC.

Matt grew up in the city of Warrington, which is located on planet Lily. His parents got killed in this rift break when he was just 8 years old. He spent the following five years at Warrington’s Upper East Side Orphanage #3. At the age of 9 he began training in order to become a delver and then at 13 he was awakened.

Matt was on the bus to school, during the rift breaks on planet Lily, when this tier 4 turtle/porcupine rift beast attacked and damaged the bus that he was on. The bus rerouted toward the more affluent city center where the kids waiting in this fancy hotel’s ballroom for their parents. But Matt’s never showed up for him.

Matt has hazel eyes and sandy hair. By the time he was 14, he was 5’10” and at 16 and a half, he was 6’2”. By the time he reached 18, he was over 6’5”.

Aster’s egg was the prize for this Rift Challenge which Matt should not have completed but did anyway. Her name was decided because she was incredibly inquisitive as a child and reminded Matt of stargazing with his parents when he was incredibly small and they patiently told him the name of every star when he asked them. Aster’s favorite food is ice cream, which she got after they first left the PlayPen.

Aster insists on being held during Teleportations because she got thrown up on during their second jump. Her cultivation is a 70/30 split toward mana Cultivation.

Elizabeth Moore has bright yellow eyes and red hair. Her mom was an evolved companion. Liz broke her leg twice when she was three years old by attempting to jump off of a roof to fly. The second time she used a bathsheet. She has the ability to track an open wound.

Emmanuel has got a tier 35 watching Liz at all times from chaotic space so that she can be saved should she come close to dying. The number of protectors got increased to six after the breakthrough with Aura rifts research were made with Matt’s aperology.

“The Path of Ascension” is the first novel in the “Path of Ascension” series and was released in 2022. Matt (having been orphaned by Monsters) has to power up in order to save others from suffering the same fate.

Matt plans on delving the rifts that are responsible for the monsters that destroyed his city and killed his parents. However his dreams get crushed when his Tier 1 Talent gets rated as being detrimental and no group or guild is willing to take him.

Working at this nearby inn, he meets this powerful and mysterious couple. They give him the chance to join the Path of Ascension, an empire wide race to ascend through the Tiers and become living legends.

Matt, with their recommendation and one stolen Skill, starts his journey to the peak of power. He can then maybe get the vengeance he is seeking.

Matt is a determined, hardworking, loyal, compassionate, and intelligent character. Meeting Elizabeth truly turned things around for him, and it’ll be interesting to see what the duo and Aster get up to in the sequel. These rifts are interesting, as are the people that Matt meets in the novel.

“The Path of Ascension 2” is the second novel in the “Path of Ascension” series and was released in 2023. With this unexpected temporary addition to the team, Aster, Matt, and Liz venture out into the ever-expanding frontier. And there, they will deal with the challenge of an unexplored planet and all of its hidden dangers.

Their journey on the path of ascension continues. However do they have what it takes in order to persevere?

Fans love that the quality of character growth and worldbuilding continues in this novel. It’s great seeing these characters having to deal with a harsh reality and make these choices that most would try and avoid. The plot’s pacing, action scenes and emotional moments were all of a high quality.

“The Path of Ascension 3” is the third novel in the “Path of Ascension” series and was released in 2023. Glory. Training. Practicing for War.

Shortly after pressing all of his Talents in this attempt for treasure netted a whole planet a reckoning against autonomous golems and this flying rift, Liz, Matt, and his Bond Aster find themselves getting sucked into war.

With the sides being drawn between two rival kingdoms looking for approval in order to join the Empire proper, those that run the Path of Ascension are offered this shot to pick sides and battle it out in order to gather experience. Garner prizes, glory, and power.

With a whole kingdom’s survival on the line and the eyes of so many on them, which side is going to make it out on top, and how is this going to affect the team’s Path of Ascension?

“The Path of Ascension 4” is the fourth novel in the “Path of Ascension” series and was released in 2023. Aster, Liz, and Matt (after they participated in the Empire’s vassal war) have now got a fire nipping at their heels. Or rather, Luna (their new manager). And she demands their best at all times, or she’ll drive them off of The Path of Ascension.

With the Tier-10 tournament looming in front of them, this gang will have to dig down deep if they want to continue on this path, however Luna’s not the only one that has plans. Can Liz, Matt, and Aster survive the machinations of a Tier-40 that has created several Ascenders before? Or are they just going to be yet another statistic on The Path?
