Timothy Hallinan has always dreamed of being a writer ever since he was young. After reading the novel Gone with the Wind at 11 years, Timothy realized that it was exceedingly possible to come up with a story that is much more interesting than real life encounters. His journey did not stop there because when he was at the eighth grade, Timothy fell in love with his English teacher, Miss Reid who was 22 years old at that time. To display his affection, Timothy decided to write a love poem to the teacher, who upon receiving it handled it with care and an extra ordinary delicacy. The English teacher gave the poem a positive critique and told Timothy that he truly was talented. As he grew up, Timothy joined a band where he began writing and composing songs for them before he got a real job. After getting his first job, Timothy began to write at night. During the day Timothy Hallinan worked as a consultant for several corporations where he used to advise them on various issues such as audience building and sponsorship.

As time went by, Timothy created his very own firm, the Hallinan Consulting where he was contracted to create several educators websites for TV programs such as The Supreme Court, Slavery in America and The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow. His writing career did not pick of immediately as he had hoped. It was until he wrote his third book that he landed a three book contract which later on landed him a six book contract. The six book contract series was about an over educated LA Private Investigator Simeon Gist. This series was widely accepted and positively reviewed with most of the tittles appearing on several best 10 lists. In the year 2007, Timothy Hallinan returned with a second series which was set in Bangkok, his current city of residence since the 1980’s.Timothy Hallinan was born in the year 1949 and is best known for the Simeon Grist series and Poke Rafferty series.

A Nail through the Heart

A nail through the heart is the first book in the Poke Rafferty series and addresses several key issues such as child porn and moral ambiguity. If you love novels that have been written in an exotic setting and has an affable and imperfect hero then this novel might just be what you need. Since he has spent over 10 years in Bangkok, the description of the city in this novel is very vivid while the sights and sounds are authentic. Hallinan’s knowledge of the Thai people and the respect he has for their culture is very evident in the book where he invites the reader to share the affection he has for Thailand. In this series, the imperfect hero is one Poke Rafferty who has travelled to Bangkok to write. As a writer, Poke Rafferty has written several travel related articles under the tittle, “Looking for Trouble”. While in Bangkok, trouble finds him, as he falls in love with a former go-go girl named Rose. In the book we are also introduced to one Miaow who is an eight year old orphan and her friend superman who happens to be a street kid.

Poke Rafferty hopes to marry Rose and adopt the little girl Miaow. One problem that Poke has struggled with throughout his life is his inability to say no. Since Poke Rafferty can’t say no, he agrees to assist a policeman to locate a man who has been missing for some time. As Rafferty and the policeman conduct the investigation they meet with one Madame Wing who offers Poke a good amount of money to assist her find somebody who stole something of hers. The money that Poke has been offered is very tempting since he will give some to Rose for her business while the other will be used to raise Miaow. Later on, Poke discovers that he has been caught in the center of a web of deceit. In this book Hallinan has managed to draw the reader’s attention by using luminously crafted descriptions of personalities and places. When describing one’s physical appearance, Hallinan gives the reader a glimpse of the character’s emotional state. It is worth to mention that despite the fact that he describes Bangkok with shear respect, Hallinan does not fail to highlight the city’s darker side. All in all, this novel is not only an easy read but also a compelling one.

The Fourth Watcher

As the second book in the Poke Rafferty series, the Fourth Watcher is a riveting read just like the first installment and is a suitable option for people who love thrillers. This novel has been written with great wit, spine-tingling twists, a likeable character, edge of your seat suspense, an exotic foreign location, heart-pounding surprises and an ever deepening storyline. The Fourth Watcher is a sensational book that you just cannot put down. In this book, Hallinan takes the reader to East Asia, a land that is filled with vibrant cultures, smiling faces and spiritual ideals. The villains in this book are terrifying while the suspense and the atmosphere is unnerving. Hallinan’s writing skills blends excitement with drama and also with an incredible wit and a great deal of humor.

In this installment we follow the story of one Poke Rafferty, an American travel writer who is on the verge of giving up on his book, “Looking for Trouble” so as to settle in with his new family. As he is settling down in with his new family, Poke Rafferty wants more than just writing travel novels. He is looking for real life experiences which he can then put in his new book, hence he contacts a former CIA agent, Arnold Prettyman to show him how to follow people without being caught. Poke Rafferty’s thirst for real life experiences lands him in the middle of an international thrill ride that will eventually have him running for his dear life. While looking for answers, he digs into some dirty secrets of very powerful men which as expected puts him on a hit list. Furthermore, Poke is also in for another surprise as a long lost someone eventually walks back to poke’s life but this time there will be no happy reunion as this individual has come back for help. Will Poke turn down this special someone or is he going to dive into the case? Only time will tell. All in all, the Poke Rafferty series is a fast paced read that has deeply drawn characters and an opulently drawn textured.
