With a clear, strong and highly articulate voice, the American writer and novelist Tom Bouman has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, as he has made a considerable impact upon the scene with his unique brand of mystery and crime novels that are attracting readers from far and wide on a global scale. Knowing his audience he chooses his words carefully, as he is a master of precision with nothing going wasted within his novels, as he brings his characters and narratives to life, using a very visual and highly stylized method in the process. Consistently of a high quality and caliber as well, he really knows what it is that he’s trying to say with his work, as it gets the point across with seemingly minimal effort, creating an articulate and evocative style of prose in the process.

Early and Personal Life

Born and raised in America, the author to be Tom Bouman always had a creative streak running through him as he had strong passions for both reading and writing, as well as music too. Maintaining these interests throughout his childhood and into his adult career as a writer, he would soon gain a firm grasp on what it was that he was trying to express. Whether it was through music or through the written word, he would constantly be honing and refining his skills as artist and as a creatively minded individual with a clear passion for the arts.

Attending school and then graduating from high-school, he would always be interested in the arts, as he maintained his passions constantly throughout with a clear love of what he ultimately wanted to do. Focused always on the end goal, he would constantly be trying new avenues for expression, allowing him to soon create a niche that was all of his very own. This went into his adult career as well, even after he had left school, as he continually take in inspiration from his surrounding environment, and put it back into his work, thus informing his voice in the process.

Going on to work as book editor, he was able to get hands-on experience with the written word and literature in a professional environment, giving him an even greater understanding of his craft. This was alongside his career as a musician, which also helped to shape him into becoming the individual and author that he currently is today. All of this allowed him to formulate the foundations of his career and give him a basis to work upon, ultimately building his career up, as he started to concentrate on mystery and thriller novels.

With a clear gift for suspense he was soon well on his way towards becoming a writer who was well known for being able to build tension and excitement. Still writing to this very day, he lives in northeastern Pennsylvania where he resides with his wife along with their daughter, as he carries on looking for new ideas for his next big project. Showing no signs of stopping anytime soon, it appears that there’s a lot more to come from him yet, as his writing career grows from strength-to-strength on into the foreseeable future.

Writing Career

Releasing his first novel in 2014, Tom Bouman made his way onto the literary scene with his book titled ‘Dry Bones in the Valley’, which was the first in the ongoing ‘Henry Farrell’ series of novels. These two novels would then make up initial debut franchise, as he soon followed this title with the book ‘Fateful Mornings’ which he later brought out in 2017. Writing for prestigious publication such as ‘The Guardian’ as well, he would soon gain a large amount of exposure as a writer too, building up his profile as a writer.

Gaining awards such as the ‘Edgar Award for Best First Novel by an American Author’ he would come to be revered by the critics, as well as the general public. This would lead to not only critical acclaim, but commercial success as well, with his book selling worldwide, as they reached an international audience on a global scale. With plenty more titles set to be released on the horizon it seems that there’s a lot more potential for him to grow as an author and as an artist, ensuring that he’s definitely one to watch for the future.

Dry Bones in the Valley

Winning an Edgar Award for best first novel, along with a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, this was the debut novel from Bouman as an author. Setting up the ongoing Henry Farrell series, this works at establishing the franchise, creating a sense of style and tone that is unlike any other seen before. First brought out on the 7th of July in 2014, this book was originally released through the W. W. Norton and Company publishing label to much acclaim.
Starting out with Officer Henry Farrell, it sees him leading a murder investigation after an elderly recluse discovers a body on their property. This traditionally sleepy and quiet community is then threatened, as it appears that this case could potentially tear everything apart for everybody. Set in Pennsylvania, it takes a look at the onset of gas drilling and how this potentially hazardous new activity could not only erode public safety, but public loyalty as well. Will Henry find the killer? Can he keep the community safe and together? Where are the dry bones in the valley?

Fateful Mornings

Brought out through the W. W. Norton and Company Publishing house once again, this title picks up from where the previous title left off. Continuing in much of the same style and tone as before, it provides more of the same, as it finds the eponymous officer leading another investigation, whilst also offering some surprise twists and turns along the way. Initially brought out on the 27th of June in 2017, this helped further develop the character of Henry Farrell, building upon his arc and the narrative that preceded it.

Heroin has arrived into the small quiet Pennsylvanian community of Wild Thyme, and with it an onset of burglaries and crime that threaten to tear apart the area once more. Henry must then head off from the small town and venture outwards after an investigation into a shooting a disappeared girlfriend takes him beyond his usual boundaries. Moving into the industrial vice district, he finds that he may have one of his greatest challenges to date, as he heads into a murky underworld that threatens to consume his very being. Will he find the truth? Can he stop the crime wave? What will become of the fateful mornings?
