Tracey Lange is a general fiction author best known for her debut novel “We Are the Brennans.” The author was born and raised in New York City, but went to New Mexico for college.
Afterwards, she became the owner and operator of a Pacific Northwest based behavioral healthcare company, which she ran with her husband for the better part of fifteen years.
“We Are the Brennans,” which was her debut novel, was completed and finally published in 2021. She did all this, even as she studied in a novel writing program offered online. She currently lives with her husband and two sons in Bend, Oregon.
Lange was born in a big Catholic Irish family, which perhaps explains why she can write about an Irish Catholic family with such ease.
Her father was born in Northern Ireland and had fourteen siblings. Her mother also has a lot of Irish blood on her side of the family, even though they have been living in New York for several generations.
Tracey was born in the Bronx but when her parents were appointed superintendents of an Upper East Side residential building, they had to move to Manhattan. She remembers growing up that they had friends and family all over New York, on Long Island and in Westchester, and hence she knows all about most parts of the city.
Her extended family from her father and mother’s side is flung far and wide from Ireland to California and many other places in between. Tracey has relatives she has not talked to or seen in years, but still believes the sense of family remains strong.
She is sure she could show up on any of their doorsteps tomorrow and be welcomed all the same.
Tracey Lange has always been intrigued by themes of loyalty and family and the idea that no two families are alike. Every family has their own code that could have been passed down through several generations.
She started thinking about what would happen if a woman came back home after years of being away from the family. This presented all manner of possibilities and questions including why she left. And how she would deal with new and old resentments.
Lange was drawn to these themes as she comes from a family that has been Catholic for several generations. As a child, she went to church every Sunday. She also attended catechism classes till she was thirteen, even though she never liked it.
It was when she became a teenager that her parents finally stopped the incessant nagging and allowed her to sleep in when they went to church. As a teenager, she went to a Catholic high school as her parents believed the highly structured system would help her forge an identity.
By this time, she was so far gone but since she had grown up in the Catholic culture, it has always remained part of him. While this was not something that only the Catholic religion did, she believes her Christian upbringing had too much focus on shame and guilt, hiding flaws and mistakes.
There is a constant cycle of even well intentioned people keeping secrets, which could carry on over the generations, where it can cause untold damage. In her novel, it was all about writing about a complicated but loving family, which ultimately finds redemption and forgiveness by facing truth together, instead of hiding from it.
“We Are the Brennans” by Tracey Lange is the story of Sunday Brennan, a twenty nine year old. At the opening of the novel, she is just waking up in a hospital in Los Angeles following a drunk driving accident that had left her battered and bruised. Too weak to live by herself, she moves back home to New York.
It is not easy, since she had abruptly left without any goodbye or explanation to any one almost five years back. Sunday wants to rebuild her life in New York, even if she has to tiptoe around an ex fiance and resentful siblings.
The longer she is in New York, the more she acknowledges that she needs them in her life just as much as they need her. But then a dangerous man she knows from the past comes back and almost destroys her family’s pub business.
The only way she can protect the family is to turn family secrets on their head. These are secrets that for generations have caused untold damage to the family and could pose a threat to everything they hold dear.
