At the same time, she also started working for a magazine called Aurealis, which was an Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine. The first trilogy written by her was The Black Magician Trilogy, the novels of which were published between the years 2001 and 2002. The first novel of The Black Magician Trilogy was published by the Orbit publishing house in the year 2001. It was titled ‘The Magician’s Guild’ and is set in a fantasy world called Kyralia. The main characters of the novel include Akkarin, Sonea, Rothen along with a few others as well. In the opening sequence of the novel, the fantasy world of Kyralia is introduced as a place full of magicians who carry out their desired works without out any fear from the non-magicians who live in the slums. Every year, the magicians of Imardin gather in the city of Kyralia, which is considered to be the city of undesirables and purge their magical powers. They are cloaked and protected in their sorcery and move in Kyralia without any fear from the miscreants and the vagrants, who always try to despise them and their magical works.

Sonea is introduced in the novel as an exceptional girl living in the slums. She is described by the author as more powerful than the average novice of Kyralia and possibly has more magical powers than the average magician. She seems to be enraged at the magicians and hurl stones at the invaders. In spite of being just a teenager, her stone penetrates the magical shields of the invaders effortlessly. The shield which was called as the Magicians’ Guild was hard to penetrate by a normal being and when Sonea’s stone penetrates it, the magician’s begin to think she also has some magical powers even though she lives in the slums. Her magical powers are raw and is beyond the imagination of the magicians of Kyralia. Hence, they decide to find and train her to use her powers efficiently before she destroys the city of Kyralia along with herself, as she does not understand her magical powers and does not possess the force to control it.

The second novel of the trilogy was published in the year 2002 by the Orbit publishing house. The title of the novel was ‘The Novice’ and just like the first novel of the series, this novel is also set in the magical and the fantasy world of Kyralia city. The novel continues to feature the same characters, including Sonea, Akkarin, Rothen and others. In the opening plot of the novel, it is revealed that even if a magician of Kyralia possesses magical powers and they surface of their accord, he should have the knowledge of controlling it otherwise he will be dead soon. Sonea finds herself alone among all the other novices in the Magicians’ Guild as she comes from a lowly beginning. However, her magical powers are stronger than any other novice with the help of which she has been able to win several powerful allies such as the newly promoted Guild AMbassador, Lord Dannyl. He is the only one whom she could trust. But, Dannyl is sent on court duty to the Elyne court, leaving Sonea alone once again in the middle of the malicious rumors and lies that her enemies like to spread. Then, the High Lord Akkarin comes to her rescue, but his support meant that Sonea had to safeguard his mysteries, which was full of secrets leading to deep darkness. Meanwhile, Lord Dannyl is ordered by High Lord Akkarin to resume the research work of the ancient magical knowledge. He sets out on an extraordinary journey full of unknown wonders and a terrible future.
