V.D. Bucket is a comic fiction novelist who is best known as the author of the “Bucket to Greece” series of novels.
He is from Manchester in the United Kingdom but at some point, he moved to Mani in Greece from where he gets much of the inspiration for his novels.

The name V.D. Bucket which is a pseudonym has a very interesting history involving his wife. After he moved to Greece from Manchester, Marigold his wife thought he was too idle following his retirement.
She thought it would be great if he wrote a novel about their experiences in Greece following an illustrious career in the United Kingdom as a public health inspector.

Since V.D. knew that his wife would be mortified if he used his real name, he decided to go back to his childhood where he had been abandoned in a bucket as an infant, hence the name V.D. Bucket.
Once he published “Bucket to Greece Volume One,” readers loved it and just could not get enough of it. He has been publishing ever since.

When it was time to publish his novel, V.D. Bucket initially thought of going the traditional way. But since he was an unknown author with hardly any cred, he ultimately decided to become a self-published author.
Moreover, he did not like the idea of handing over 90% of his royalties to traditional publishers and losing pretty much all control over his work.

He also feels that he had more reach with Amazon Kindle as readers can practically download and binge-read all of his novels, whereas most traditionally published novels rarely get featured on Amazon Kindle.
Since he believed there was nothing a traditional publisher could do for him that he could not do for himself, he decided to do it on his own. It took V.D. Bucket a few months to write the manuscript for his debut which he ultimately published in 2019.
He has since used the popularity of that debut to make a series. He now manages about a novel every three months as his readers are usually clamoring for another a few days after he releases a new title.

When V.D. Bucket is not writing his novels, he likes to engage in all manner of hobbies.
Some of the things that he loves to do include uncovering contaminated sauces and germ-ridden horrors while inspecting grubby kitchens, and teaching culinary-challenged experts lessons on Greek cuisine.
Sometimes, he can be found growing vegetables and keeping chickens or relaxing in his garden spa, visiting Greek sites of interest, reading, and cooking.

V.D. Bucket’s “Bucket to Greece” introduces a British couple who decide to start afresh in a new country complete with their imported felines.

The comical account covers everything from the pitfalls and joys of adapting to a strange culture to how much they miss their home back in the UK.

Upon arriving in Greece and making the decision to become an author. Victor knows that he needs a pseudonym so that he will not embarrass his wife if their move to Greece goes belly up.
He takes the name V.D. Bucket from his childhood and begins chronicling their experiences in Greece.

He is still obsessed with exacting hygiene standards from his days as a public health inspector which are not in line with the standards common in rural Greece.

While trying to master the complexities of the Greek language, he has several embarrassing encounters until they strike a friendship with Spiros the local undertaker.

The latter is looking to sell his house in Meli a small village in the charming mountains of Greece. But it seems he forgot to mention that an Albanian is living in the shed in the garden and that the old lady neighbor loved to burn plastic.
For the most part, he does a spectacular job of selling them on the excellent views of the property.

“Bucket to Greece, Volume Two” by V.D. Bucket continues to follow Victor and Marigold who are starting out anew in Greece.

The couple has been in Greece for about three months and have even moved into their house in Meli which was blessed in the traditional Greek way.

Victor integrates into village life and over time works hard to improve his language skills, even as he helps out at the local tavern, which he has sanitized to his exacting standards of hygiene.

Marigold has become quite the matchmaker and has recently planned a dinner party for the most eligible bachelors in Meli. She is hoping that Geraldine her best friend who is visiting will be able to meet someone she likes.
Things get interesting when Guzim his Albanian farmhand disappears soon after a late-night brawl leaving Victor in a quandary. He begins contemplating the wisdom of informing the authorities that the illegal Albanian immigrant has gone missing.
Victor has to deal with the ups and downs of Greece, even as he continues to hold on to some of his British behavior.

Since Greece is very warm he loves to take a dip in December which he could not do in the UK, which the locals find to be very bizarre.

He does not like being forced to wake up on a cold windy morning to light the oven and bake bread for the village.

“Bucket to Greece, Volume Three” continues to follow Victor and Marigold and their experiences in Greece.
At the opening of the volume, they are feeling the heat as their water supplies are running low, even as Victor is doubting how good he can become with the Greek language.
He quit his gig as a chef at the local restaurant but he is now busy at their home kitchen experimenting with Greek vegetables.

He also works part-time as a tour guide taking tourists to Olympia, where he often gets an opportunity to dazzle his captive audience.

Victor has to become pig-headed when Marigold demands air conditioning and a swimming pool, as he convinces her that they are not hygienic at all.
He is lucky that Marie gets distracted by the arrival of an unexpected visitor.

But then catastrophe strikes when Catastrophe her beloved feline is killed by a moron. However, they receive some positive news that Guzim their Albanian has found employment on the coast.
Meanwhile, their friend Spiros has fallen for the live-in Filipino carer and has somehow become a very callous real estate investor whom Marigold thinks is a bad influence on Victor.

I am almost finished with Volume 15 of the series, and was hooked at Volume 1. I am so sad for the series to end because I have thoroughly enjoyed the antics of all these characters! They always brighten my day. What a great author.
