Vasily Mahanenko is a science and fantasy fiction novelist and is one of the founding fathers of the GameLit and LitRPG MMO science and fantasy fiction genre.

It was in 2012 that he published “Survival Quest” his debut novel which spawned “The Way of the Shaman” series that was massively popular in 2012. He now has more than forty titles to his name across several series and continues to write at a prolific level.

Like many authors, Vasily Mahanenko made use of his experience in the writing of his novels. During his college days, he was a hardcore gamer and hence he has a lot of insider knowledge, which he makes use of to come up with very believable virtual reality MMO games in his writings.

His bestselling series “Way of the Shaman” combines video games and fiction to tell the story of Shaman and his friends, who are stuck in a very dangerous world.

At some point, Vasily worked as an ERP implementation project manager for at least a decade. As such, he makes use of his experience to make for well-organized writing in which he sets deadlines, strict schedules, and even has a budget unlike most of his colleagues.
Given how much attention he paid to the project, it is no wonder that it would become a very popular series that even made him considered one of the founding fathers of the genre.

Several of Vasily Mahanenko’s works have been translated into English among several other languages.

Outside of his writing, he also loves space exploration and this is evidenced in his “Galactogen” series of novels. The novels are set in a space simulator-based world, where players are offered huge rewards by the game owners, if they successfully navigate the world.
Vasily sometimes provides his fans and readers with free announcements and giveaways to subscribers to his mailing list. He can also sometimes be found on his social media profiles on Twitter and Facebook.

Vasily Mahanenko’s novel “Survival Quest” is a work that introduces the virtual world of “Barliona,” which is about all manner of monsters, battles, and players too. Players come to Barliona to seek what is impossible to get in the real world, including princesses, dragons, magic, elves, and unforgettable combat.

It would become so popular that most players never left and spent months in the game. It is a world in which everything goes and hence you can become a legendary thief, a mythical hero, or a wizard, or you can level up and even assault other players.
The only rule is that you are now allowed to feel actual pain. However, the exception is criminals sent into the world who feel pain and hence Barliona is a personal Hell to these. The criminals are all about surviving the virtual inferno rather than the quest for abundant loot or dragon gold.

The lead in the novel has been sentenced to eight years and has to mine raw ore for the government, which is then sold to other players. As a prisoner, he was given a random starting character and could feel everything including pain.
He is also forbidden from leaving the designated area except under hard-to-achieve and specific parole conditions.

Just like in many games, he needs to use his gaming skills, fortitude, and quirks of his profession to survive and succeed.

“The Kartoss Gambit” by Vasily Mahanenko is set in the very world of Barliona, brimming with entertainment and fun. The government guarantees the in-game currency and allows it to freely circulate and this has resulted in an influx of players looking for easy money.

It does not take long for game developers to learn that they could get some free labor from criminals who have been convicted. While their physical bodies are imprisoned in virtual capsules for auto maintenance, their minds are released into the virtual mines of Barliona.
The lead in the novel is Dmitry Mahan, who is serving eight years and has been designated a Jeweler and Shaman. He makes use of his instinct as he embraces his abilities as a shaman to leave the correctional facility and head back to Barliona.

He finds himself in a very small town and thinks that there is no way he is ever going to get opportunities to level up. But surprisingly, he always finds all manner of new challenges and quests posted for him. Mahan finds himself in all manner of interesting action, as the story is chock full of action from the first page to the last.

It is a fascinating work that only gets better when Mahan finds himself in the middle of a very complicated plan that could also be very dangerous.

Vasily Mahanenko’s “The Secret of the Dark Forest” is set in the very same world of Barliona. It is a place known as a place of entertainment and rest, even though that does not apply to everyone.

For Daniel Mahan, this is nothing but a survival arena as he has been through it all. He has worked in the mines, had to face betrayal from fellow prisoners, and finally was subjected to retrial, which finally sent him back into the common world of Barliona.

He could have kept to the shadows and enjoyed some freedom as he did the rest of his sentence but since he is a shaman, he cannot help it. Mahan soon finds himself appointed leader of the clan and has to lead the top players in the continent to the Dark Forest, where they hope to claim its secrets.

The work picks up from where the previous novel ended as the new Dark Lord and new Emperor are chosen. Mahan meets up with his best people from the first novel and arranges a very fun raid into uncharted territories. It is here that we see the grittier and darker side of the games.

Vasily treats us to a delicious story as the people who refused to listen to the lead get a healthy dose of karma. Even better, we get to enjoy the fact that those who stood by him are handsomely rewarded.
