Writer of children’s science-fiction and fantasy literature, Lloyd Alexander managed to create a legacy that has stood the test of time to this very day, inspiring countless stories and films in his wake, most notably that of Walt Disney’s ‘The Black Cauldron’, as he built worlds and characters that would become beloved by all worldwide, with scores of readers all across the globe. This would develop of the entirety of his writing career, as he would make a name for himself writing in a style that was both engaging and accessible to young children. Producing over forty books during his career, he would also be one of the most prolific authors working within his field too, with a whole host of titles under his belt. Winning numerous awards for his work too, he would also become a highly celebrated and much lauded writer during his time too. Born in 1924 he would live until 2007, creating a legacy that remains timeless to this very day, with more and more readers continually discovering his work all the time. Building fun and engaging stories for his characters, he would also create rich and varied worlds that would draw his readers in, allowing them to immerse themselves deep within them. This would also allow him to become a lot more prominent as a creator of not just imaginative and highly influential stories, but also compelling characters who were far more than simply being two-dimensional caricatures. Despite many of his series being written a long time ago, he would still continue to find an audience many years later, with a lot of his leading protagonists continuing to resonate with audiences a long time after. He would also create a number of adult books during his lifetime too, allowing him to communicate his ideas in various different ways too. Known for his ongoing series and franchises too, he would become well regarded for his ability and skill when crafting a long-running narrative. One perfect example of this is that of his Vesper Holly series, which follows the eponymous character of the title, as she goes about having a series of globe-trotting adventures. Working within the Young Adult genre, they would start in 1986, as they would feature the young orphan of Vesper Holly going on adventures, whilst also being looked after by her aunt and uncle. Featuring the mystery of where her father disappeared to whilst on an expedition to the Balkans, they follow her as she has one adventure after another, all equally engaging and entertaining, keeping her readers firmly glued to the edges of their seats throughout the generations.

Starting out in 1986 with the title ‘The Illyrian Adventure’, these would continue until the year of 2005 with ‘The Xanadu Adventure’, which would wrap the series up in its entirety. Running for a total of six novels, it would provide a fun and engaging series that would feature a whole range of different ideas from Alexander as an author. With fans of the franchise worldwide, it really stands apart from the rest thanks to its originality and sense of wit, that makes it quite unlike any other.

The Illyrian Adventure

Initially published through the Puffin Books publishing label, this would originally come out on the 18th of December to much acclaim. Setting up the character of Vesper Holly for the first time, it would see many of the principle ideas and core themes also being established. It would also come to provide her with her first adventure for the first time too, allowing her to get involved in the self-contained story and mystery.

Set in 1872, this would see the character of Vesper Holly heading off to the small country of Illyria, as she and her guardian would head off there for a legendary treasure said to be located there. It is here that her and Brinnie find themselves caught between two opposing rebel forces, as a deadly and fierce struggle is taking place around them. Not only that, but it would also seem that there is someone out there looking to kill the both of them two, as they must also struggle to survive. Will they manage it? Can they find the treasure? What will happen on the Illyrian adventure?

The El Dorado Adventure

Brought out through the Puffin Books publishing outlet again, this would provide the second title in the ongoing and now much loved ‘Vesper Holly’ series of books. Continuing on from the last, it would carry on in much the same vein as before, allowing the lead protagonist to have another adventure. Initially published on the 30th of April in 1987, this would provide some further developments for the characters, allowing the series to develop overall.

Receiving a summons to Central America by none other than Alain de Rochefort, both her and her guardian Brinnie are extremely surprised by the arrival sudden signed invitation. Heading down there straight away, she aims to explore the land that she has apparently inherited, whilst also locating de Rochefort himself. It is here that she quickly discovers that de Rochefort is representing the nefarious Dr. Helvitius who plans to build a canal through this land, whilst also uprooting the indigenous Chirica Indians who have been living there for generations. Can she stop him? Will the dangers that the evil Dr poses to the land, such as earthquakes and volcanoes, overcome and consumer her? What will take place on the El Dorado adventure?

The Vesper Holly Series

Whilst this may have been one of Lloyd’s lesser known series, it still is a majorly important one, with its engaging lead character who really speaks for herself as a central protagonist. Vesper Holly comes alive off of the page, giving readers a very real sense of who she actually is as a person, something which audiences globally have related to ever since, regardless of where they’re from. With a legacy that will continue to grow for many years to come, this is one franchise that will stand the test of time for a long time yet, and is a must of any fans of the genre or the author.
