Author Vicki Delany is a famous Canadian mystery novelist who was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the year 1951. The bestselling author also uses the pen name Eva Gates occasionally in her literally works of fiction. Delany is a frequent panelist at various mystery conferences, including the Canadian ‘Bloody Words National Mystery Conference and the American Malice Domestic and Boucheron conferences. Vicki Delany is also an active member of the Capital Crime Writers and the Crime Writers of Canada. Author Vicki is a family person evident by the fact that she is a mother of three beautiful daughters going by the names Alex, Julia, and Caroline.

As a young adventurous woman, fresh from quitting Carleton University in the middle of her last year, Delany traveled to South Africa, where she happened to meet a man and got married. The relationship resulted in her pretty daughters whom she really adores and cherishes. Having experienced the politics of power and oppression firsthand for eleven years, unlike other Canadians during her stay in Africa, she returned to Canada together with her children. Vicki Delany is currently regarded as one of Canada’s most varied and prolific crime writers due to her exceptional skills.

Delany started her writing career as a Sunday writer due to various reasons. Her full-time job as a computer programmer as well as her crucial role as a single mother left her only with Sunday afternoons as the only time she would have some alone time to think, draft and write her stories. However, one by one all her three daughters moved out of their home as the years passed, leaving her with more than enough time to advance her writing career. Delany, who was employed by the Royal Bank of Canada as a system analyst and computer decided to retire in the year 2007 to focus more on her writing career.

Having had enough of working in the high-pressure financial world as a skilled system analyst, Vicki chose to settle down to the Prince Edward County, Ontario’s rural life where she currently resides. Over the years, Delany has managed to publish various novels and book titles in a variety of genres and subgenres, including light- hearted historical, modern gothic, police procedural, psychological suspense, crime mystery and standalone suspense novels. Her popular book series “Constable Molly Smith” has been adapted into a variety of TV shows by Brightlight Pictures.

“Constable Molly Smith Series”

‘In the Shadow of the Glacier’

In the Shadow of the Glacier, which is an entertaining, fast-paced mystery novel is an introductory story to the “Constable Molly Smith” book series. The book is about the main female character going by the name Molly Smith which is short for ‘Moonlight Smith’ as she was named by her hippie parents. It is an interesting story about how she transforms from a clueless rookie cop to a skilled detective with a knack for solving mysterious crimes. The interesting story is set in the small British Columbiana town of Trafalgar where serious trouble is brewing after an ex-American Vietnam War draft dodger visitor decides to donate money and land to the town’s residents.

However, there is a specific condition attached to the deal making it mandatory for the money to be used in building a special garden to honor war draft dodgers. This request ends up tearing the town in two with a group of people supporting the cause while others deeming it as an unfair waste of resources and funds. Molly Smith, who is a young woman from the region and upcoming constable, is working on her first major case only to stumble on the body of businessman Reginald Montgomery. Montgomery had been actively engaged in opposing the construction of the Commemorative Peace Garden and instead offered to build the unpopular Grizzly Resort. This act does not make the case any easier as it increases the number of potential suspects with a desire to hurt him.

Molly, who is the daughter of a Vietnam draft dodger, tries to find her balance as her parents are against her career choice and the male members of the traditional police department find it hard to work with a female police. She is forced to work with Seargent John Winters, who is the boss in charge as he is new to the area and would need her knowledge of the area to solve Reginald’s murder. This is definitely a great book about how a young Canadian officer gets to become a good detective by making many unwise decisions and learning from her mistakes in the small town with serious ecological and political issues. It is no secret that working with Constable Molly can be frustrating at first, but in the end, her great instinct help in saving the day.

‘Among the Departed’

Among the Departed is a carefully crafted story about how the opening of a closed missing case ends up opening hidden old wounds while bringing to light dangerous secrets that some people would rather kill to keep hidden. The story starts fifteen years ago when Constable Molly Smith had gone to her best friend Nicky Nowak’s house for a night’s sleep over. Everything goes on perfectly and she is picked by her mother after having breakfast at her host’s home. Shortly after his first daily meal, Mr. Nowak decides to take a walk not knowing it will be his last.

Constable Molly Smith, who is now cuddled next to the fire with Adam Tocek is forced to abandon her comfort when Tocek his called together with his dog to a nearby wilderness camping site in a bid to join other lifesavers who are looking for a little boy who had gone for a dangerous adventure in the territory of the bears. It doesn’t take long to find the child who is pretty shaken, terrified, dirty and weeping but unharmed. During the interrogation, Adam Tocek’s dog digs up human bones which are later identified to be Mr. Nowak’s.

Seargent John Winters decides to revisit some old case files after opening the Brian Nowak murder investigation. He comes face to face with a family shattered as a result of the disappearance of their father and husband. The deceased wife is an empty shell of a woman, her son Kyle is highly troubled and Nicky Nowak is living in Vancouver afraid of human interactions. The deeper the murder investigation goes the more and weighty the old secrets that are brought to light are.
