Early and Personal Life
It was always the case that Victoria Goddard was going to be interested in fantasy, as she would focus on it from an early age. Fantasy was also always her primary focus of interest as well, setting her sights on the genre, and making it work for her over time. Finding her own voice within the genre, she would go on to develop her style and take on the format, constantly moving it forwards.
Going on to study Medieval Studies, she would gain a PhD from the University of Toronto, studying Boethius and Dante. All of this would feed back into her work, as it would become part of her own output, inspiring her a great deal in the process. Currently living in the Canadian Maritimes with her three dogs, she continues to write regularly, as she also gardens in and around her farmhouse.
Writing Career
The literary career of Victoria Goddard would begin back in 2014, starting with the novels ‘Till Human Voices Wake Us,’ and ‘The Tower at the Edge of the World.’ The second of which would commence her ‘Tales of the Nine Worlds’ series of fantasy novels, as she would go on to create many other fantasy series. Included in these were ‘Greenwing and Dart,’ ‘Sisters Avramapul,’ ‘Red Company Reformed,’ and ‘Lays of the Hearth-Fire.’
She would also go on release numerous novellas over the course of her writing career as well, beginning with ‘Scheherezade’ in 2014. All of these would largely be stand-alone titles, and would also be centered around the fantasy genre, along with her shorter stories. Contributing to omnibus editions and collections, she would make a name for herself globally, with more and more discovering her everyday.
Whiskeyjack
First published in 2018 on the 20th of January, this would be released on the Kindle publishing platform to a great deal of acclaim. Setting up the third book in the ‘Greenwing and Dart’ series of books, it would carry on from where the previous books left off. With many of her books and series interlinked and connected to one another, it’s best that they’re read in order so as to gain the most from them all.
Slaying a dragon, Jemis Greenwing has now been acknowledged as the Viscount St-Noire, as he heads to the Winterturn Assizes where his stepfather’s will will be read. But everything changes once he’s suddenly arrested for murder by magic of one of the most legendary and greatest folk heroes. Now he’s on the run in the Arguty Forest, meeting all manner of friend and foe, from illegal distillers to highwaymen and relatives. Will be able to clear his name though, can he find out the truth behind it all, and what will finally become of Whiskeyjack?
As fantasy novels go this one is definitely a lot of fun, as it really pushes the genre to its full potential, giving her writing a real sense of vitality. Everything from the world-building to the character development and arcs is managed with expert precision, really capturing the essence of what came before. Allowing readers to fully lose themselves within her intricate and cleverly written narrative, it’s a definite must for both fans of the genre and of the author’s other work.
The Redoubtable Pali Avramapul
Originally brought out through the ‘Underhill Books’ publishing imprint, this first arrived on the 17th of May in 2022. Marking the second title in ‘The Red Company Reformed’ series of novels, carrying on from the previous novel and building the world further. Another fantasy novel, the series itself would be a spin-off, and, again, it’s best that they’re all read in order to gain a full understanding.
Once legendary, the Red Company had made a name for itself prior to the Fall of the Empire of Astandalas, now fading into myth. Not going under her own name ever since the Red Company fell, Pali Avramapul still fights injustice wherever she may find it. Working as a scholar in one of the Circle Schools of Alinor, she soon returns to adventure following the possible plot of the kidnap of the Last Emperor of Astandalas. Will she be able to find her way once again, can she pick up from where she left off, and what will become of the redoubtable Pali Avramapul.
This book is another fine example of the fantasy genre at its best, clearly showing readers what Victoria Goddard does best. Taking them on a journey, she provides plenty of highs and lows, really building upon the excellent and engaging premise from before. It also provides further insight into the Red Company from before, giving her audience an even greater understanding of the world at large.
