An Assassin's Guide to Love and Treason (2018)Description / Buy at Amazon

Largely writing Young Adult and fantasy novels, focusing on the more historical angle, American writer Virginia Boecker has become a literary sensation over the years. Taking fantastical flights of the imagination, she is highly adept at guiding the reader through her rich and vivid narratives, building upon her fun and inventive premises. This has seen her create a number of exciting and intelligent franchises, many of which have amassed loyal readers worldwide, gaining an audience both nationally as well as internationally. Really getting to the heart of her stories, she is also highly skilled at creating characters that fully resonate with her audience, regardless of where they’re from. Previously working as a technical writer, she really knows and understands how to write for a large audience, whilst simultaneously making her stories authentic and true to her.

One area that she particularly excels in is writing stories that draw her young audience in to otherwise under-represented areas. Mainly focusing on history, she takes the past and molds it to fit the witty and fun stories that she wants to tell, whilst also retaining a high degree of authenticity. Using the past, she manages to make it feel fresh and exciting to her ever loyal following of younger readers, many of whom feel they can easily relate to her work. Not only that, but she also manages to maintain a sense of momentum throughout, as it takes her audience on a journey, as they continually keep coming back for more. With a lot more to to come, she has built an industry around her own idiosyncratic brand and name, something that will continue for quite some time to come.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in America, Virginia Boecker would always harbor a strong passion for both reading and writing from a very early age. Constantly immersed in a book, she would also be found nurturing her love of literature, taking inspiration from the world around her. Over time she would build upon this, building upon her love of her craft, evolving and developing it through the years. This she would continue throughout her education as well, as she came to develop an appreciation for both history and fantasy. Creating her own style and tone, she would begin to hone and refine her own voice, developing it as time went by.

Studying at the University of Texas, she would graduate having developed an obsession with English medieval history. This she would continue pursuing during her time spent in London, where she spent over four years, before returning back home. During this time she would build upon her knowledge of medieval history, as it would come to form the basis of many of her books to follow. Immersing herself in a world of kings and queens, she would create a rich and vivid narrative world, bringing to life a whole tapestry of evocative ideas and stories. Currently living in Lake Oswego in Oregon with her husband, she still writes to this very day, and will continue to do so for a long time yet.

Writing Career

Bringing out her first book in 2015, Virginia Boecker would release her debut novel, as well as the first title in ‘The Witch Hunter’ series. Titled ‘The Witch Hunter’, it would set-up the series, along with the subsequent prequel novella released just a few months later titled ‘The Healer’ in August. This would introduce readers to her work for the first time, as well as giving them a clear idea of what to expect in the books to come.

Winning awards for her work, she would come to be regarded as on of the leading writers working within her field. Mixing history with the fantastical, she would begin to develop her own niche. Over time she has gone on to create a strong name for herself, which continues to this day.

The King Slayer

Initially released through the ‘Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ in 2016, this was first published on the 14th of June. Marking the second title in ‘The Witch Hunter’ collection of books, it continues on from the last one directly, picking up from where it left off. Developing the world and the characters, it carries on in much the same vein as before, whilst also providing some twists and turns along the way.

Hiding from the bounty that has been placed on her head by Lord Blackwell, Elizabeth Grey, the former witch hunter, is keeping a low profile. As the usurper of the king of Anglia, Blackwell is in convalescence from their last encounter, although he is adamant he will not be defeated during their next encounter. Preparing for a war against all those that call themselves witches and wizards, he aims to take her and newfound allies on, as they are set to resist his rule. Now having lost her magical protection as well, she must seek to protect those close to her, and hold back the cruel rule of Blackwell. Will she manage it in the face of insurmountable odds? Can she keep herself safe in the process? What will become of the king slayer?

An Assassin’s Guide to Love and Treason

Published through the ‘Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ publishing label, this was originally brought out in 2018 on the 23rd of October. Working as a stand-alone novel, it’s a historical Young Adult title, one which follows to young protagonists, in what is otherwise a romance fraught with peril. Clearly a gifted writer, this is one novel that really shows Boecker at the peak of her writing career, definitely broadening her appeal and her audience as a whole.

Lady Katherine has just discovered that, not only has her father been murdered for practising Catholicism illegally, but he was also planning to kill Queen Elizabeth I as well. Taking it upon herself to complete his mission, Lady Katherine decides to head to London and assassinate the queen. Seeing her opportunity in a William Shakespeare performance for the queen, she decides to use it as her chance to perform in front of her majesty and complete the deed. That’s when she meets Toby Ellis, another young performer there who, unbeknownst to her, has been tasked with rooting out any and all rebellion. Will she discover that he’s really a spy? Can they withhold their passion for one another, as the boundaries of all that they previously believed are blurred? What will happen in an assassin’s guide to love and treason?
