Wayne D. Dundee is a bestselling fiction author that was born and raised somewhere east of the Missouri River. He was initially introduced to the mythical West through the popular TV shows and movies of the 50s and 60s.
As a child, the family moved a lot even though they spent most of their time in Southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. During this time, she loved to watch all manner of old shows such as “Wagon Train,” “Wyatt Earp,” “The Rifleman,” and “Have Gun Will Travel.”
Her universal favorite was “Cheyenne” among several other Warner Brothers classics. On most Saturdays and Sundays the family would be found gathered around the TV watching black and white Westers from the 40s and 30s that featured the likes of Ken Maynard, Buster Crabbe, Tom Mix, and Tex Ritter.
Her parents were also huge fans of John Wayne and used to watch all of his movies when they were released. Wayne Dundee also read the likes of Whitman Book tie-ins among many other western books while he was in grade school.
By the time he was in high school, he had graduated to more mature fare such as Robert MacLeod and Gordon D. Shirreffs that she got from drugstore racks.
Before 1998, apart from two or three business flights to Los Angeles and several excursions to eastern Iowa, Wayne Dundee had never been anywhere west of the Mississippi.
However, he was posted to a managerial position in Ogallala Nebraska by the company he had been working for. He took up the offer for career-oriented reasons, but also because he could not have been more excited for the chance to head West.
When he visited Ogallala before he took up the job, he was so excited and went to visit the beautiful locations such as the Rocky Mountains, Chimney Rock, and Oregon Trail.
He was hooked by the beauty of the place and felt that there was nowhere else he belonged. Dundee for the first time felt the sweep of the big sky and the vastness of the land unencumbered by the tall buildings and trees.
He experienced the frontier spirit, work ethic, and simplicity that still remained very much alive in the lands of the panhandle. He drank it all in as he explored and traveled, taking in everything he possibly could.
In subsequent years, Wayne D. Dundee’s explorations and travels took him through northwestern and central Nebraska as well as Kansas, South Dakota, New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada.
He now makes use of his experiences to pen his western fiction novels. He has done things and been to places he could only have dreamed about when he was a boy. Dundee has seen the West as wilder, grander, and bigger with spirited and grittier people than could be captured on film or paper.
Wayne Dundee wrote “The Burning Season” his debut novel in 1988 and has never looked back since. He has now written more than thirty short stories and more than four dozen novels.
His works have been translated into several languages and been nominated for several awards including a Shamus, Anthony, and Edgar Award and several Peacemaker Awards.
He is also the original editor and founder of “Hardboiled Magazine.”
“Hard Trail to Socorro” by Wayne D. Dundee is the story of Bodie Kendrick, a bounty hunter who has no trouble apprehending his prey. He goes to claim the reward but this turns out to be quite difficult.
First, there is the beautiful woman named Veronica Fairburn, who runs her own business in Socorro. She insists on staying by Kendrick’s side when he leaves to go to Socorro alongside his prisoner.
He also has to deal with a gang of rough ranch hands who want to get their hands on the prisoner so that they can exact vengeance on him.
In addition, there is a band of renegade Apaches conducting raids all over the place. Last of all is the Mexican stalker who is so creepy that he makes Kendrick’s blood turn cold.
Things are further complicated by the developing feelings between Veronica and Kendrick. However, the biggest challenge of all is the daring journey they have to make across the so nicknamed “Journey of the Dead” – the Jordana del Muerto.
Wayne D. Dundee’s novel “Rio Matanza” continues to follow Bodie Kenrick, one of the most effective bounty hunters in New Mexico and Arizona. On the other hand is Doc Turpin, a Texan who has a similar reputation.
The two bounty hunters team up to track down and apprehend the Harrup-Klegg Gang. The bloodthirsty gang has needlessly killed innocents as they fled, following a huge robbery at the New Gleanus bank.
But the gunsmoke from the incident has barely cleared when Turpin is mysteriously lured away. The man who lured him is Estraleta a rebelista firebrand who comes to him in the middle of the night.
Puzzled by his new partner’s ill-explained and sudden departure, Kendrick goes after the two of them as he wants to investigate the mystery. His only clue is that they are heading to the Bordadosa notorious border town on the south.
Kendrick finds himself at the center of a conflict between a corrupt Rurale official and some local rebels who want to take back their town.
The official has on his side a wolf pack made up of tens of desperados who have made Bordados their haven and intended to keep it. Once again Doc and Kenrick working with Estyraleta and an ex-Confederate colonel fight huge odds.
“Diamond in the Rough” by Wayne D. Dundee is the story of Bodie Kendrick who arrives too late to stop the ambush of a stagecoach. However, he managed to save the lives of most of the passengers and the driver.
Among the passengers was a freelance journalist named Amelia Gailwood who is working on a huge story. In order to prolong the life of her story, Kenrick agrees to become her bodyguard so that she can work safely.
The chase takes them from the smoky and dingy opium dens to the rowdy mining town whose streets are laced with gunfire. They also cross remote and treacherous mountains and across a punishing desert.
At the heart of their endeavor, is a mythical gem from the time of Cleopatra and Caesar. But before they can take possession of the gem, they will have to fight fierce mountain Apaches and survive betrayal from within their ranks.
All this while they are evading a pack of hired guns sent to retrieve the gem by some mysterious collector.
