Early and Personal Life
Wayne Walter Dyer was born in Detroit, in Michigan, to Hazel Irene Vollick and Melvin Lyle Dyer. As a young child, he spent a majority of his time in an orphanage based on Detroit’s east side due to his father leaving the family. Eventually, he graduated from Denby High School and joined the United States Navy, serving between 1958 to 1962. After his service, he graduated with his Ed.D. degree based in counseling, receiving it from Wayne State University, the dissertation being titled ‘Group Counseling Leadership Training’ based ‘in Counselor Education’.
Dyer was a professor tutoring in counseling psychology based at St. John’s University in New York City. He also had a practice in private therapy. His lectures made at St. John’s University, focusing on motivational speaking methods and positive thinking, were well-received by many students. This led to his first book, titled ‘Your Erroneous Zones,’ which was published in 1976. Wayne took to the road and pursued a publicity tour of the United States which helped him land on the best-seller lists.
Throughout his life, Dyer was married a total of three times. With Judy, his first wife, she gave him a daughter. His second wife, who was Susan Casselman, did not have any children. With Marcelene, his third wife, he would have five children, along with two stepchildren coming from Marcelene’s previous marriage. After 20 years of marriage, they separated in 2001 but later reunited and stayed married until his death from a heart attack on August 30, 2015 at age 75.
