The American writer Jack L. Chalker is a world renowned writer of modern science-fiction and fantasy novels that have struck a chord with the public at large, having reached a worldwide global audience, with his inventive style of prose that really manages to draw the reader in, ultimately allowing them to feel as if they’re really a part of the action and narrative itself. Showing the reader a vision of another world, he transports them using the breadth and scope of his imagination, leading them on a journey that takes the reader ultimately on an experience that is outside of themselves, showing them a new an insightful perspective on the genre. Using his imagination, he is a powerful writer, and one that really understands how to make the most of his format, writing from a distinctive and unique perspective, one that’s really resonated with readers, regardless of their background or where they’re from. This also includes his characters who are in-depth, whilst they transform throughout his novels, both spiritually and physically, this being a theme that Chalker continually comes back to time and time again. Allowing his work to speak for itself, he also ensures to speak his own distinctive message, giving a high level of insight into his own personal worldview, something that is entirely new to the field. Over time readers have come to appreciate this, this being something that is all of his very own, as he has amassed a strong following both nationally and internationally too. Not only that, but he really manages to engage the reader on a visceral level too, keeping them continually hooked throughout, setting up a compelling narrative that allows them to remain on the edges of their seats. This can especially be seen within his many series and franchises too, as they are maintained over a long period of time, thus giving his long term fans something to invest themselves in. A perfect example of this, and perhaps his most prolific series to date, is that of his ‘Well World’ series of novels, a franchise that spans over a vast collection of novels. Incorporating a collection of series, including ‘Saga of the Well World’, along with ‘Watcher at the Well’, the ‘Well World’ franchise features an entire universe with a vast array of different elements involved. Allowing the readers to invest themselves in this epic world, the ‘Well World’ series of fantasy novels is one that will stand the test of time for a long time yet.

Running for a collection of two series so far, these started out in 1977 and lasted till the year of 2000, ranging a whole collection of different narratives and characters. Beginning with ‘Midnight at the Well of Souls’ in 1977, it would all commence with the ‘Saga of the Well World’ series which would run for a total of seven novels, lasting until 2000. This would later be accompanied by the the ‘Watcher at the Well’ series, which would start with the novel ‘Gods of the Well of Souls’, which would itself be published in 1984, it being the third title chronologically in the series, as this series would run for three in total. The first novel chronologically, ‘Echoes of the Well of Souls’, would be released in 1993, marking it as one of Chalker’s most comprehensive series to date, something which will carry on for a long time yet.

Midnight at the Well of Souls

Initially released in July, 1977, this would come out through the Baen Books publishing label, as it would see the entire ‘Well World’ franchise commence as a whole, It would also make up the first part of the ‘Saga of the Well World’ series too, setting up the tone of much of what was to come. Introducing not only the lead characters for the first time, it would also introduce the world, allowing the reader to discover it through the protagonist’s eyes.

Nathan Brazil is the owner of a cargo ship-for-hire, as he finds himself detouring from his pre-planned route in order to attend to a distress call. That’s when a hidden stargate propels him far across the universe, as he finds himself and his ship stranded in the Well World, a master control planet which houses the godlike race that shaped the entire universe. It is here that he discovers someone aims to seize control of the Well of Souls, a power that could potentially give them control of the entire cosmos. Will he be able to stop them? Can he navigate this new alien world? What will happen during midnight at the Well of Souls?

Echoes of the Well of Souls

Using the ‘Del Rey Books’ publishing outlet to release this book to the public at large this time, this would make up the first chronological book in the ‘Watchers of the Well’ series. Preceded by ‘Gods of the Well World’ which would be released in 1984, this being the third chronological title, ‘Echoes’ would come out in 1993. Further establishing the world and the universe as a whole, this would develop the series and the characters, thus building upon everything that came before.

With Nathan Brazil having been a long time guardian of the Well of Souls, he was previously overseeing the safety of the entire cosmos. It now appears that an ancient alien entity has been awoken from its slumber and released from its prison, as it seeks to destroy the Well World and the entire cosmos. This must be prevented at all costs, as it could mean chaos would potentially reign throughout the entirety of the universe and existence itself. Can it be stopped? Who will save the day? What will become of the echoes of the Well of Souls?

The Well World Series

Epic in both its scope and its scale, this really is a series that manages to incorporate a whole range of different elements into its mix. Taking its readers on a long and expansive journey, it’s easy to see why so many have taken to the series, with both the critics and the general public singing its many praises. With a whole range of different characters, it is absolutely a series for any fans of both the author and the genre as a whole, as it really immerses the reader on an emotional level. Creating a legacy that will carry on for a long time yet, this is one series that will not be going away any time soon, with a lot more readers discovering it day-by-day, as its audience grows with every passing year.
