The Hunger is the first book in the Hunger series by Whitley Strieber. Miriam Blaylock is the main character in this enchanting debut novel from Strieber. She is forever young and beautiful, but that eternal youth also comes at a price. She is someone that is going to have to watch herself either isolate herself from the population at large or take a chance and hope that the curse does not claim another person that she cares about.

Miriam has allowed herself to get close to a man and soon he became her husband. But even though he adores her, she can already tell that the curse is taking a toll on him. Scared and about to be alone in the world, Miriam is horrified when he dies. But that doesn’t stop her from going out into the world because she is hungry for love. However, her new partner is going to be someone that she believes will be resistant to the curse. Otherwise, she’s just a murderess that’s willing to sacrifice lovers for her own selfish gain, knowing full well what they are in for.

Can Miriam find the soulmate and partner that is going to fulfill her needs and break the curse’s streak? Only time will tell in this seductive debut fantasy novel from Whitely Strieber.

Miriam has also witnessed what it was like to see the agony of undeath in her mother’s soul. Centuries passed and she spent it receiving wisdom from up above as well as inheriting some of the sly nature of the devil. She’s felt safe as hundreds of years passed by, and her immortality never came under threat once. Except for now. After a couple hundred years, you almost start to take your ability to live forever for granted– until it’s in danger of being taken from you.

Miriam is starting to consider her immortality as something that is now gone. Like so many other things, it is now of the past. Paul Ward is an agent for Interpol. He is one who is aware of vampires where so many others remain ignorant to their very existence. Paul has been on a mission for a very long time and has even had battles with the undead. He knows their nature and how to defeat them, but you can never be humble enough when it comes to taking on these infinite creatures.

Paul sees it as his duty to clear the land of these vampires. He not only knows their weaknesses, but he has their Book of Names, a sacred vampire book. But he knows that Miriam is not to be underestimated. She is his personal weakness, and if she gets the upper hand on him, the agent knows he’s going to be in trouble.
