Eloisa James is a best-selling American author who has appeared on the tops of charts like the New York Times. It is the pen name used by Mary Bly.

Eloisa is known for writing historical romances, which have earned her lots of readers. Reviewers have praised her work, with People Magazine noting that when it comes to romance writing, it ‘does not get much better than this’. She has gotten starred reviews for her novels from Library Journal and Publishers’ Weekly and appears on best-seller lists on a regular basis.

Eloisa attended Harvard University and graduated, going on to Oxford University to get a Master’s in philosophy and getting her Ph.D. from Yale. She became a professor on Shakespeare and published an academic book courtesy of Oxford University Press. She works in New York City at Fordham University as the head of their creative writing program and as an associate professor. She has written an op-ed in the New York Times defending the genre of romance and articles that have appeared in a variety of publications.

The author says that working as a professor teaching Shakespeare is like having two lives. The literature professor in her constantly leaks out into her romances and many of her novels have Shakespearean resonances. She also frequently puts early modern poetry into her books. When she takes off her romantic or academic power suit, she says underneath is the sweatshirt of a mother (with chocolate stains on it). She also uses her motherhood experiences in her books.

In addition to being a mother. a friend, a professor and a writer, she is also a wife. Her husband was born in Florence and is Italian. He’s also a knight, referred to as ‘cavaliere’ in Italian. The couple spend the summers with his family in Italy. She enjoys the irony of the fact that she is a romance writer that’s married to a knight– quite romantic!

The best-selling author has published over thirty books, sold over seven million copies worldwide, and had her works translated into 26 languages. In addition to being a Shakespearean scholar, she also serves as Fordham University’s Chair of the English department. She uses the pen name of Mary Bly to write books, such as Lizzie and Dante, a story about a Shakespeare professor.

Eloisa splits her time between Florence and New York City. She lives in New York for the school year and spends her summers in Florence, Italy. She is also the daughter of literary parents. Her father is Robert Bly, a poet who has won the American Book Award for Poetry. Her mother is Carol Bly, a short story author. On top of that, her godfather is James Wright, a poet that won the Pulitzer Prize for his collected poems.

Eloisa has also been on television a few times. She was featured on CBS Sunday Morning in 2017 as part of their Valentine’s Day segment. In 2014, she also was featured in a romance documentary called Love Between the Covers, which won film festival awards.

Eloisa appeared at the Romance Writers of America conference in 2009 and gave a keynote speech. She also made an appearance at the keynote panel for the Shakespeare Association of America conference. The author has given a talk in the D.C. National Book Festival, writing an essay about it after for the Washington Post in 2012. Eloisa also won the RITA Award for her book Seduced by a Pirate in 2013.

Eloisa James is the creator and author of the Wildes of Lindow Castle series. The series first began in 2017 with the release of the first book in the series, Wilde in Love. In 2018, the second novel in the series came out, titled Too Wilde to Wed. The same year, the third novel came out, titled Born to Be Wilde. Book four came out in 2019 and is titled Say No to the Duke. The fifth book plays upon that title, as the 2020 book is titled Say Yes to the Duke. The sixth book came out in 2021 and is simply titled Wilde Child.
