Drawing heavily from pulp fiction and tales of the weird, he’s got numerous inspirations running behind his work, clearly showing a creative and inventive mind. Keeping readers constantly guessing throughout, he’s definitely a writer with something to say, always including a strong message underneath. This is something that has also won him scores of fans from all over, allowing to build his profile and his range as an author.
Driving each of his stories is well written characters as well, bringing them to life and drawing readers in. Staying with the readers long after they finish, Meikle’s books definitely leave an imprint on the audience, as the characters stay with them. This is something that Meikle does throughout all of his work, making sure each title works individually on their own merit. With lots more to come in the future too, he’s definitely a writer that’s going to be sticking around for quite some time to come.
Early and Personal Life
Born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, in 1958, William Meikle grew up with a strong passion for both reading and writing. Constantly working on his craft, he would develop his voice, finding his own unique approach to the genre as a whole. Largely focusing on horror, he managed to create a style and a tone that was very much his own, allowing him to become the writer he wanted to be.
Publishing both short and long-long fiction, he would reach readers from all over with his work, relating to his audience regardless of where they’re from. Finding inspiration from the world around him, as well as from his peers and contemporaries, he would continually be looking for his next big idea. Currently living in Newfoundland, Canada, he continues to write regularly, putting out books on a consistent basis to an eagerly awaiting audience.
Writing Career
The first novel William Meikle published was back in 2000 and it was a stand-alone novel titled ‘Millennium Macabre’ helping him to establish his name. Later he would go on to start a number of long-running series too, beginning with ‘Watchers’ in 2003, which was a fantasy series. This would start with the novel ‘The Coming of the King’ and it would be well received upon its initial release making way for more to follow.
With over thirty novels, and 300 short-stories and counting, Meikle is also one of the most prolific authors currently working in his field to date. Working for numerous different publishers over the years, he’s also seen his work published in a variety of different publications too, including Penumbra and Buzzy Mag. Released in thirteen different countries across the world, he maintains a profile both online and off, as there’s more on the horizon.
Culloden!
First brought out through the Gryphonwood publishing label back in 2004, this was first released on the 30th of December to much acclaim. The third and final part of the ‘Watchers’ series, it wraps everything up, finishing it all in the epic fantasy finale. Working as a trilogy, it’s best that the books are all read in order, so as to make the most out of the series, getting everything from it.
With a huge victory just being won recently, the war still remains ahead of them all, as the Boy-King hopes to find a bride and heir. The officers of the Watch hope to stop him, but they battle their own inner demons too, all while finding themselves lured to the moors of Culloden. Here they will face all manner of foe, as the dead are rising fast, and they must all prepare for the final confrontation before them. There’s a darkness fast approaching them all, as victory is close to hand, as they finally face the final enemy to end it all.
As a conclusion to the three-part fantasy series, this really delivers on every level, making for an exciting and tense story. There’s a lot here for the reader to invest themselves in, as it’s a satisfying finale to what has definitely been an epic series. With all the characters being developed, it provides a definite sense of closure for them all, really delivering on the promise of the previous novels.
The Skin Game
Once again released through the Gryphonwood publishing imprint, this first came out in 2010 on the 25th of December. Marking the third title in the ongoing series ‘The Midnight Eye Files,’ this would carry on from the previous two in much the same vein. It would also provide plenty of twists and turns of its own, although it’s best that the books are read in order, despite featuring self-contained stories.
Everything appears to be picking up for the Glaswegian private investigator Derek Adams, as his agency is finally being respected. Still haunted by nightmares, though, he continues to turn to alcohol, as the dark side still has a hold over him and his past. Inquiring about a shady bookie and his various dealing, Adams is pulled into a battle with a shadowy unknown, as he finds that he may be in over his head once again. Framed for a murder now, he’s on the run, as he has a strange skin belt that seems to be taking on a life all of its very own.
With plenty of mysterious elements, this is an extremely entertaining novel, effectively following up the previous two titles. Developing the world and the character of Derek Adams, it works on a number of different levels very well, creating a dark tone and ambiance. Featuring a compelling story that draws the reader in, it manages to keep them turning right until the very last page.
