William Nolan is a renowned American author of western, science fiction, horror, fantasy, magical realism, literary fiction, and crime fiction novels. He has written several mind-blowing book series in his career, including The Black Mask series, The Kincaid series, The Logan series, and The Challis series. Some of his most notable works include Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, Logan’s Run, etc. Author Nolan got involved in writing science fiction during the 1950s. He wrote and published a few fanzines during that time that included The Ray Bradbury Review. At the same time, he got acquainted with and befriended several popular authors of fantasy and science fiction, such as Robert Bloch, Charles Beaumont, Ray Russell, Richard Matheson, and Ray Bradbury. He became a professional writer in 1956. Nolan is particularly well known for his novel Logan’s Run, which he co-authored with George Clayton Johnson.

Overall, he has penned hundreds of pieces, including poetry, nonfiction, and prose, for publications such as Rogue, Dark Discoveries, Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Nameless Digest, etc. Author Nolan has written several mystery novels that are included in the Challis series. In addition to an illustrious career in the field of novel writing, Nolan also had a prosperous career in the film industry. He has worked primarily with Dan Curtis and has co-written the screenplay of the 1976 horror movie Burnt Offerings that featured Bette Davis and Karen Black in the lead roles. Nolan has also served as an editor of anthologies and collections. Recently, he co-edited a couple of anthologies with his filmmaker & writer friend named Jason V Brock. The collections edited by Nolan contain stories contributed by many of his fellow writers such as John Shirley, Richard Matheson, Dan O’Bannon, Ramsey Campbell, Richard Selzer, S. T. Joshi, Earm Hammer, Jr., etc.

Nolan also collaborated with Bluewater Productions for writing a comic book series called Logan’s Run: Last Day. It was published in 2010. Additionally, Nolan developed one more series of comic books for Bluewater that featured stories adapted by Jason Brock and Nolan. Another forthcoming comic book miniseries has been developed by him and approved. Among the many accolades of author Nolan, he has won the Edgar Award on two occasions from the MWA. The International Horror Guild voted him Dark Fantasy’s Living Legend in 2002. In 2006, the SFFWA bestowed him with Author Emeritus’ honorary title. The Horror Writers Association gave him the Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Nolan won the World Fantasy Convention Award in 2013 and another Bram Stoker Award in 2014. In 2015, he was named a Grand Master of World Horror Society.

Author Nolan was born as William Francis Nolan in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 6, 1928. His parents were Irish Catholics. Nolan studied at the Kansas City Arts Institute for a brief period before going on to work for Hallmark Cards, Inc. He used to write verses and illustrate greeting cards for the company. Later, Nolan moved to California with his parents, where he worked in offices before coming across Charles Beaumont. The two remained good friends until the latter’s untimely death. Nolan claims that Beaumont played a major role in inspiring him to become an author. He also had close friendships with Ray Bradbury and Norman Corwin.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Nolan was a member of the Southern California School of Writers. It was popularly known as The Group and had writers who used to write for Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Star Trek, and several other well-known series of that time. Author Nolan loves animals very much and claims to be an ethical vegetarian. He is still active at the age of 91 and tries to write new material every day. Various conventions and conferences have invited him as Guest of Honor. Nolan entered into a marriage in 1970, but lives estranged from his family for over 10 years. Currently, he lives in Vancouver, WA. Whenever Nolan gets a new idea, he gets excited and feels the urge to write about it. He is always high-spirited and never lets anything come between him and his writing.

A successful book series written by author William Nolan is known as the Logan series. It is comprised of a total of 5 books released between 1967 and 2010. Each book of this series features the central character in the role of Logan. Nolan has set this series in the 23rd century. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Logan’s Run’. It was released by the Bantam Books publication in 1976, after its original release in 1967. The story takes place in Los Angeles, California; and South Dakota in the year 2116. Author Nolan has depicted the primary characters in this book in the roles of Jessica and Logan. Initially, it is mentioned that the life of humans gets over before they 21 and Logan is currently 6 years old. He has received training to kill. His upbringing has been such that others see him as the best among the best. With time running out, Logan is required to carry out his last mission, that is, find the Sanctuary and destroy it. It is believed that those who oppose and defy the system take shelter in the Sanctuary. Before Logan could complete the mission, he comes across Jessica and falls in love with her. The more he tries to understand the situation, the more he starts questioning the system that he had sworn to protect. And before they could realize, both Logan and Jessica find themselves running to save their lives.

The second volume of this series is called ‘Logan’s World’. It was also published by Bantam in 1977. This novel opens by depicting that the Earth’s computer system has been destroyed and it is not forced to deal with savagery. The charred world is now being ruled by scattered tribes. Elite killers of the surviving corps look to hunt down scavengers that roam around in broken cities. A psychotic former Sandman leads the elite killers in search of the scavengers. When the loved ones of Logan face tragedy, he sets to come out to their rescue. Logan takes up a journey across the ravaged world to take vengeance. His efforts lead him to the path of ultimate destruction that he tries his best to avoid.
