Wine of the Gods series is a science fiction series by Pam Uphoff. The series is centered on genetically engineered children who grow up to do more than the average person has ever dreamed of. Despite their superpowers, the genetically improved children are treated as property, left to the mercy of its owners. It is for this reason that these children stage a revolution and use their unique abilities to revolt against those who ill-treat them. Their plans lead to their banishment to a parallel planet that comes with challenges of its own.

While the parallel world offers freedom, the gods will soon realize that even the lack of restrictions comes with both positive and negative consequences. The Wine of God’s series is set in the future. It introduces the reader to a fascinating cast of teenagers and young adults with incredible powers and exciting personalities.

Outcasts and Gods

The Outcasts and Gods is the first book of the Wine of the Gods series. The book features Wolfgang Oldham, a genetically engineered child struggling with his identity. The engineering company claims him when he is a teenager. Still, Wolfgang escapes for three years before he is recaptured again. Despite his identity crisis, Wolgang is always ahead of the rest. He is a curious lad, and his adventures lead him to discover a lot about his unique abilities.
The book starts with a successful cure for a genetic disease. Once the infection is cured, the engineers decide to go ahead and select the best natural traits and use them to make genetically improved children. The children are seized from their parents and taken through a particular school. The school is designed to bring the best out of their abilities. While these children grow like any other children, their unique skills start to emerge when they enter teenage hood. At first, those that created these children are curious to see how far they can go with training. Once their abilities become apparent, their creators start to fear them.

The OAG heroes are teens and young adults who are genetically engineered. The company responsible for engineering treats them as slaves who have to follow their instructions to the letter. The heroes are not too happy about the way they are treated, and there are plans to take action and teach the users a lesson. Their users have no idea that the training these children went through not only made them useful but also dangerous. As they grew, their abilities became more refined as their powers increased.

Because of their abilities, the genetic engineering company sells the children to those who require their services. Unfortunately, they are not treated well. When the children discover that they can unlock gates and enter other planets using telekinesis, they make plans to escape from their owners. Will these children be able to escape and overpower any resistance they may face? What about the new dimensions? Is life going to be better there, or are OAG heroes better off here on earth where they can stand up to their owners?

This is an exciting read that will keep you looking forward to more. The characters are lovable, and the science-fiction theme in this book is on another level. While the book is set in the future, the story flows well and is understandable to any Science fiction fan if you are looking to travel ahead in time and explore a world where children can be genetically engineered to carry genes that are said to be superior.

Exiles and Gods

Exiles and Gods is the second book of the Wine of God’s series. The story follows the plans by the OAG heroes to run away from their owners. While the theme between this book and Outcasts and Gods are is similar, the storyline is a bit different. The Exiles and God book is made up of three stories covering the Gods, the exiles, and the disasters. These three stories start from the time the Gods are exiled to their life in the parallel planet to a catastrophic event that occurs three hundred years later.

The Exiles and Gods book features Chris Dunmeyer, an athletic high-schooler with a good brain and a great body to boot. The fact that Chris is genetically modified comes as a shocker to him, and things changed drastically when this information becomes public. Chris is not only prevented from participating in sports at school, but his peers start to treat him differently. It does not help that the rest of the world feel that Chris and others like him should be expelled from earth. For a teenager, the rejection from all quarters and the discoveries are more than overwhelming.

Through a parallel world technology, the genetically modified team is banished to another planet. Adapting to the new planet is not easy, and it does not help that the team is still undergoing genetic and social changes. There is also wildlife in the new world to worry about. The plus side the gods, are now free to explore and use their talents as they deem fit. True to their nature, the genetically modified children push their abilities to their limits. They discover that they can do more than their owners could ever let them. Just like other books in this sequel, the Exiles and Gods story is set in the future. It is incredible how life could change if genetic modification ever became a possibility.

This is a fast-paced book, and the stories in it are nothing but enjoyable. Even though this is the second book of the sequel, you can still enjoy it as a standalone — definitely a good read for a science fiction enthusiast. The Exiles and Gods will push your imagination into the future and the possibilities that may come with time and technological advancement. If you have The Outcasts and Gods, here is an excellent chance to interact more with the heroes in this first book as you get introduced to many others.
