The World of Adventure series is a series of adventure series based on the children’s adventure genre. The series is written by the famous American writer Gary Paulsen. There is a total of 18 novels published in the series between the years 1994 and 1998. All the novels of the series feature a number of kids who go on numerous fun and wacky adventures. The series on the whole is a collection of some standalone which are not related to each other. Author Gary Paulsen began writing the series in the year 1994 when he successfully wrote and published the first novel of the series. The fact the novels are not related to each other allows the readers to read them in any order. The first book of the World of Adventure series is The Legend of Red Horse. In this novel, William Tucker and Sarah Thompson are described by the author as the central characters who go on an exciting adventure. In the course of their adventure, they come to know that an ancient APache legend has been discovered in the mountains, which is tracked by many gangs of bandits so that they can capture it. The Apache legend is protected by the presence of an Apache Warrior, who is described as being headless. When they hear the news of the discovery of the respectable Apache legend near the mountains, Sarah Thompson and Will Tucker wish to go and witness it. But they are required to get past one of the gangs of bandits as well as the headless warrior of the Apache. This novel is followed by the second novel of the series in which Tom and Brett are described as the main characters. The two best friends seem to have been hooked on the newly arrived virtual reality game known as Rodomonte’s Revenge.
Tom and Brett get so much engrossed in the game that it gets into their minds like an obsession and then gets transformed into something which seems even more real than the game itself. The following novel of the series shows the life story of the primary character named Nikki Roberts. In the plot of the novel, the author has tried to show Nikki Roberts as a kind and a helping woman. On one occasion, she tries to help and save a couple of children from a forest fire, in which they get stuck and desperately try to get out. However, she gets stopped by some poachers who seem to have some other plans. They appear to have caused the forest fire and now think of making Nikki Roberts one of the victims of the forest fire. The poachers and Nikki Roberts seem to have ill feelings for each other as they often try to get into each other’s business. On one hand, Nikki Roberts tries to stop them from doing illegal activities in the forest and on the other hand, the poachers try to kill her for coming in their way of doing things very often. When the poachers find Nikki Roberts helping the kids get out of the forest fire, they think of it as an excellent opportunity to kill her by burning her in the same forest fire. This way, they will be able to take their revenge from her and everyone will easily believe that she got burned in the forest fire accidentally. But, Nikki Roberts seems to be too vigilant about the activities taking place around her and does not let them get her very easily. Instead, she makes them pay for their evil intentions.
One of the initial novels of the World of Adventure series written by author Gary Paulsen was titled ‘The Rock Jockeys’. It was published in the year 1995 by the Recorded Books publishing house. The plot of this novel deals with the main characters Rick, J.D., and Spud, who together constitute The Rock Jockeys group. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that the three friends had a rock wall above them, which was very smooth and was like a black polished marble. The wall did not have any ledges or crevices due to which they were required to fight for each and every inch for climbing over the rock wall. Rick looked at his best friends Spud and J.D., who silently agreed to climb over it. At first, Rick stood up to the challenge of climbing the smooth rock wall and started with his attempt. He was required to mark the trails and Spud and J.D. were needed to see to it that Rick lived through his attempt. When the boys from The Rock Jockeys group become successful in climbing and reaching the top of the treacherous rock wall called as the Devil’s Wall, they find many things to explore over there. Among the things that they witness over the top were many mountain cliffs, a crashed B-17 bomber, and Wild Woodland. But when the boys come across the personal diary of a crew member they come to know that the Devil’s Wall was holding some gruesome secrets.
One of the secrets that they come to know about leaves them asking the question that if they will be stuck on the mountain, will they do anything that it takes to get out of it? One of the other novel of the World of Adventure series was published in the year 1995 by the Yearling publishing house. It was titled ‘Captive!’ The plot of this novel revolves around the life of the main character Roman Sanchez. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that his life has become very difficult for him. His father, who was a SWAT officer, gets killed while on duty. This is followed by the attack of some masked men who storm into the classroom of Roman Sanchez and hold him hostage in a remotely placed mountain cabin along with 3 other boys. The kidnappers do not seem to have much time as their deadly threats begin to be carried out. Now, it is to be seen whether Roman will be able to overcome his fear and the memory of the death of his father. If he becomes strong, then only he will be able to fight for the freedom of the three boys along with himself.
