Zoraida Córdova is a writer who was born in Ecuador but she was raised in Queens, New York. Zoraida Córdova went to high school in New York. She studied at The Hunter College and University of Montana. She is the writer of Vicious Deep trilogy, Labyrinth Lost and On the Verge series. The Labyrinth Lost series features Alex who is the bruja, a powerful witch in the generation. At her Deathday celebrations, Alex performs a certain spell to rid herself of the power. However, it backfires. Her entire family vanishes in thin air, leaving Alex alone with Nova, the brujo boy that she cannot trust. A boy whose intentions are just as dark as strange marks found on his skin. The only way that she can use to get back her family is to travel together with Nova to Los Lagos. This is a land in-between, as strange as the Wonderland and as dark as the Limbo.
Zoraida Córdova loves snark, black coffee and she still believes in pure magic. All her life, she has always liked stories about magic and the impossible worlds. Let’s now look at 2 early books in The Vicious Deep series by Zoraida Córdova:
The Vicious Deep
This is the first book in The Vicious Deep series by Zoraida Córdova. This is a great, debut voice that takes the reader under the seas with an inspirational male perspective, romance and action.
THE VICIOUS DEEP novel is quite different from other mermaid books. For one thing, the book features male protagonist. Male voices are rarely heard and a book from the point of view of a person who doesn’t know that he is a merman is rarer. In addition, the writer is female, and even though male point of views that have been written by females usually tend to have a wrong ring to them, Zoraida is spot-on in her narration in this novel. Tristan is the main character in this book. Sometimes we are meant to like him, while other times, we just want to slap him for being so cocky. Tristan feels just like an everyday person, albeit one with the deeper destiny, and his ride is one that pulls the readers in.
Tristan lives an ordinary life when a certain storm hits and then creates a tragedy with a few survivors. Even though Tristan makes it out while still intact, he has horrifying nightmares and he starts changing. One day, Tristan sprouts a tail and then realizes that an important secret has been kept away from him. Now, brethrens from down under the sea have come to inform him of his destiny. The king is aging and he needs an heir. Although Tristan’s bloodlines will qualify him for rule, he should partake in a challenge up against several other qualified candidates so as to win the crown. Doing so means giving up all his life as a human being, and not every person beneath the sea is as accepting and friendly as one might have thought.
While book gets off to a relatively shaky start. However, solidifies further and becomes tighter as you continue reading. Córdova anticipates all the questions readers might have and she answers them, from the motivations as to “why” Tristan should care a lot to the wonders down under the sea. The underwater world is quite spectacular, even though there are several threads of darkness which make this world to be more sinister than the ones that are portrayed in other novels. The book creates a creepy villain who is sure to be featured heavily in the second novel. By the time you turn the last page, it might seem as though a lot of things haven’t been resolved. However, all these developments are in place for the second book in the series; THE SAVAGE BLUE. You will certainly look forward to seeing Zoraida Córdova flesh out more about her underwater tales and seeing just where she will take you next in the second novel.
The Savage Blue
This is the second book in The Vicious Deep series by Zoraida Córdova. The first book in the series left things with a bit of a cliffhanger so you should definitely be eager to see what will come next for Tristan after he had found out the whole truth about what he actually was. Luckily, the second book in this series certainly lives up to what you hoped it would be.
The book starts off right after the events of the first book. The author does not give much context on the events of book one. As such, you might struggle to remember some of the characters. However, there are still few hints or flashbacks to help you in case you do not remember the characters. And for a series that has novels many months apart, you’ll just appreciate when the novel drops subtle hints that will help you in case you’re lost.
Tristan seems to be grown and embraced all his responsibilities even more than he had done previously. He is now on a mission to find Oracles that may lead him to the trident that’ll help him rule of the entire sea. Even though he is joined by his friends Thalia and Kurt, he is still making relatively slow progress. It does not help that all his nights are filled with the disturbing visions of the sea’s witch Nieve who is hoping to derail him from the journey.
Like many second books in any series, this is exactly what Savage Blue is all about: a journey novel. However, this is quite a slow journey and you might have a lot of difficulties getting into the whole story. Most people wish that they could see more from Tristan and Layla. Their romance life seems promising. However, Tristan is letting almost everything else to take precedence over her. You will also not hear from Thalia; one of the favorite characters in the first book.
The ending of The Vicious Deep is quite explosive and you’ll certainly not regret by wading through the 400 pages. Things are getting quite serious now and you’ll be happy to join Tristan in another leg of his adventure in the next novel in this interesting series.
