Kelley Armstrong, a #1 NY Times best selling author, is a Canadian author who primarily publishes fantasy fiction. Currently, she has twenty-eight novels on the market, thirteen of which are part of a series called “Women of the Otherworld”. She’s published one novel in a series titled “Age of Legends”, another single story in her “Cainsville” series and the six books of the “Darkest Powers” series. She also co-wrote, with Melissa Marr, a middle-grade fantasy novel in the “Blackwell Pages Trilogy”, three crime novels and several novellas and short stories that go along with the “Women of the Otherworld” series. Some of those shorts are available on her website, free to read.

Kelley Armstrong is the eldest of four siblings in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and was born on December 14, 1968. Her family is described as being typical middle class. About herself, Kelley Armstrong has said that she began telling unusual stories as child; she’s said that even before she could write she spoke of ghosts and demons and the supernatural world.

She graduated from The University of Western Ontario with a degree in psychology before moving her studies to Fanshawe College, where she pursued computer programming, with the aim of having more time to write.

She first became active in the writing world in 1999 when her first novel, Bitten, began selling, though it wasn’t officially released until 2001, and since then Kelley Armstrong has had great success in her endeavors. She has named fellow author Stephen King as one of her greatest literary influences.

Currently, Kelley Armstrong lives in rural Ontario, Canada with her husband and three children where she continues to write and publish.

A Bit of Bitten:

The first published work of Kelley Armstrong begins the “Otherworld” series.

The story follows Elena Michaels, who is ordinary in every way excepting the fact that she is the first, and only, female werewolf in the world. She hides this fact well as she lives in Toronto, Canada and writes articles for a popular newspaper, but because of her identity as the only female werewolf, she holds a special position with the Pack (the body of governing werewolves) and the distinction begins to take it’s toll on her. While she tries to assimilate with the humans of the world, she struggles with the realities of a horrible childhood, and thoughts of the man who turned her into a werewolf.

Elena is living a typical life. She cohabitates with her boyfriend Phillip, an architect, while attempting to ignore her otherwordly side. When she learns of trouble she leaves home for the estate of the Alpha of the Pack where she meets the man who, without her consent, turned her into a werewolf. He is Clayton Danvers, her ex-lover, who happens to be the foster son of the Pack Alpha.

As it turns out a local woman was found murdered and the Pack is aware that the killing was done by a Mutt, or rogue werewolf. The Pack finds the killer and engages him, though he flees into a rave where several are killed as the Mutt chases after Elena before being struck by an SUV.

When the rest of the Pack arrive they quickly deal with the trouble causers. The resulting deaths drive Elena to sleep with Clayton, cheating on her current boyfriend.

The story continues with more mysteries that must be solved before Elena can even start to hope for peace.

The Start of The Summoning:

The first novel in the Darkest Powers series introduces readers to Chloe Saunders.

The story begins with a three year old Chloe. She has been left at home with a babysitter, Emily, who sends the young girl to the basement to retrieve a soda. Chloe is reluctant to go downstairs because she has had encounters with a ghost named Mrs. Hobbs who has “tortured” the child in the past, but the babysitter threatens punishment if she doesn’t go down. While in the basement Chloe again meets Mrs. Hobbs who played a cruel trick on her by using the voice of Emily.

Enter present day Chloe who lives with her aunt, Lauren Fellows. Chloe is sent away to a group home called Lyle House when she suffers a mental breakdown at fifteen years old after she sees a ghost, with half it’s face melted off, during the day at her Fine Art’s School and accidentally attacks a teacher in her panic.

Upon meeting her new schoolmates and learning more about them, Chloe eventually agrees to help her roommate, Liz, try to ward off the poltergeist Liz thinks is attached to her and has been causing her to do things she doesn’t remember doing. The séance goes very wrong and this leads to Liz’s transfer, but Chloe suspects there is more to her disappearance. In an effort to use her abilities, Chloe stops taking the medication she has been given and once again begins seeing ghosts.

A series of trials await Chloe in Lyle House, including the death a of friend, a werewolf transformation, boy troubles, being locked up in a cell and tricked by someone she thought cared about her, and contacting the ghost of a dead friend for help.

On Television:

“Bitten” was picked up by both Space (a Canadian television station) and the Syfy channel (an American channel). The first season lasted 13 episodes and covered Elena’s time in Toronto all the way through to the Pack’s showdown with the Mutts. The series won a Leo Award and was nominated for a DGC Craft Award. It was announced in May of 2014 that Syfy had green-lighted a second season, which is slated to begin airing in 2015, and the Space channel will also be airing the second season of Bitten. On the show, Elena is played by Laura Vandervoort who has previously had roles on the television shows Instant Star, V, and Smallville.
