It has been translated into about 20 foreign languages and appears on bestseller lists all around the world. She was also the 14th person to get inducted into RWA Hall of Fame.

Cole is a native of Alabama. She lives in Florida with her family, and what she describes as ‘far too many animals’. She enjoys skiing on water with her husband when she is not writing. She holds a Masters degree and is a former athlete. Her characters and settings are based on her experiences when traveling around the world.

The Immortals after Dark (IAD) series

The Immortals after Dark (IAD) series was the first series that Kresley Cole wrote. In the series, humans and mythical creatures exist alongside each other. The immortals’ world is referred to as ‘The Lore’. Some of the factions that are appealing to the audience include the Lykae, Demons, Witches, Valkyrie, Vampires, and the Sorceri. There are also other factions and subsections of the factions that exist, with some being mentioned in passing.

Books in this series are stand-alone novels, but the sub-plot, a Lore-wide war referred to as the Accession occurs after every 500 years. The subplot is what connects the entire series. There are events that occur in multiple books, though they are seen through the eyes of different characters. Events in one book will be referred to in other books. Readers meet a new couple in every installment who are cross-factioned and predestined. They must overcome individual problems as well as outside forces that would keep them apart. One or both members of the couple will be introduced in another book. Some of the concerns that Cole addresses include gender roles. She tries to subvert stereotypes.

The series is made up of 15 novels. The first book in the series is “The Warlord Wants Forever”. Nikolai Wroth, the Warlord, is the main character. He is a cold – hearted vampire general who has to find his Bride, no matter the cost. The Bride is the only woman who can ‘blood’ him, make his heart beat and fill him with strength. His only interest is his Bride, and he does not trust Myst the Coveted to awaken his body and soul.

The Seductress is the most beautiful Valkyrie. She is Myst and devotes her life to protect a magical jewel and fight vampires. The opportune moment to torment her enemy comes when Wroth’s new heartbeat becomes a consuming sexual desire that only her can satisfy. She denies him and flees. She however struggles to forget his intense and possessive kiss.

Myst manages to elude Wroth for five years. He chases her and manages to steal her jewel. This gives the Warlord absolute power over Myst. He intends to make her experience the very same lust he had subjected her to for 5 years. He however realizes that he wants far more revenge. He frees her. The book ends in suspense: Will Myst come back to Nikolai?

The second book in the Immortals after Dark (IAD) series is “A Hunger Like no Other”. Lachlain MacRieve is the Lykae Clan leader. He has endured years of torture from Horde the vampire. Lachlain finds out that the predestined mate that he had waited for, for millennia is a vampire or partly vampire. She is a small, ethereal half vampire. This vexes him. Interestingly, she begins to soothe the fury raging within him.

Emmaline Troy has been sheltered for so long. She sets out to discover who her deceased parents are. A strong Lykae claims to be her mate and forces her to go with him to his ancestral Scottish castle. She fears the Lykae for their dark and notorious desire. The fear ebbs away as Lachlain begins a slow and wicked seduction that sates her dark cravings.

An ancient evil from Emmaline’s past resurfaces. Will their desire deepen into a love that will bring the dignified warrior to his knees? Will it turn Emmaline into the fighter she was predestined to be?

The “Arcana Chronicles” series

The events in Kresley Cole’s other Series, the “Arcana Chronicles”, take place after a post apocalyptic event triggers a game of life and death. This game is based on the tarot card deck, the major arcana or trump cards in specific. There are twenty two cards, each representing a child. Every child has a power they must wield to destroy the others. The children must outsmart each other in a bid to survive in the post-apocalyptic world. They either have to kill or be killed. There can only be one winner.

The first book in the series is ‘Poison Princess’. The main character is Evangeline, Evie, a sixteen year old. All is well in her life until she begins to experience petrifying hallucinations. An apocalyptic event destroys her hometown in Lousiana. She realizes that what she has deemed hallucinations are actually visions of the future. She is desperate for answers, yet has to fight for her life. She is left with no option but to turn to Jack Deveaux, her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate.

Jack is wicked and has a bad attitude. He has once poured scorn on Evie, but he has agreed to protect her on her quest. She can’t totally trust Jack. They set out to find the source of Evie’s visions, only to meet others who have received the same call. She discovers that she is not the only one with special powers, and that an ancient prophesy is being played out. Twenty two teens have been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. No one knows who is on what side.

Jack and Evie’s relationship is full of conflict and misunderstanding. Evie wants to understand who she is. She must fight the inside merciless part of her and be merciful. Jack wants to steal her secrets. She has powers. She must find a balance.

“Endless Knight” gives us more insight into the relationship between Evie and Jack. The Empress begins a relationship with Death. They get closer, and Evie is beginning to feel something familiar in him. He is very cunning. He tries to win her trust, yet he is after her. The truth is revealed, and the stakes are placed higher. What is the way forward? She remembers Jack’s promise of overcoming any challenge if he allowed him to get to her. She however needs Death’s touch. Life-threatening decisions must be made as the battle rages on. As usual, Kresley leaves us in suspense.

Kresley Cole is arguably the best paranormal romantic author. Her style captures you and carries you to the end of her stories, where she leaves you thirsting for more.
