When Marissa Meyer was in her teenage years, she had discovered anime and fanfiction—throughout the years she developed a hobby of creating her own fan fictions like the one’s she read. When Meyer was of age to work, her first job was at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma, Washington. Later on she attended Pacific Lutheran University and her new job was to be a mail attendant. Her stay at the University was rewarded with a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature. It was then that she realized she wanted a career as a novelist; she continued her schooling until she got her master’s degree and settled as an editor in Seattle after graduation. As an unlikely result, Meyer then became a freelance typesetter and proofreader. Days went by, and eventually the right offer struck; making CINDER her first debut novel in the Lunar Chronicles.

CINDER

Cinder revels in a dystopian fiction—a life beyond a child’s wildest dreams. Marissa Meyer reveals the beauty fallen beneath the gutter of forbidden, wicked attraction between two separate lives. Cinder, being the main character is a mechanic cyborg, the ultimate enigma. She was made to follow orders, a professional mechanic for a reason. However, she is caught between duty and freedom when Prince Kai’s enters her life. Cinder is only one of many epic novels Meyer has wrote, with each defined detail capturing the hearts of many.

Scarlet

Not too long after Meyer released her debut novel did she put her readers in awe when Scarlet was released. The book follows two factoring characters, Scarlet Benoit and Wolf. Both of them team up to uncover Scarlet’s missing grandmother, but what really shocked her readers was the appearance of Cinder herself. As Scarlet and Wolf work together to unravel one problem, they cross another mystery when encountering Cinder. Throughout the story they discover just how difficult it is to stay one step ahead of the “vicious” Lunar Queen, who was persistent in keeping Prince Kai as her husband, her king, and how many others see it, her prisoner.

Cress

With Cress being the third bestselling book in the Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and her new “friend” Caption Thorne are fugitives, with Scarlet and Wolf following. Knowledge of Queen Levana’s intents of invading Earth, they must focus on a plot to withstand her army.

That is when their best hope is discovered, being Cress—who was stranded on a satellite since her childhood with only netscreens as friends. With all of those screens and nothing else to do, Cress had made a brilliant hacker but with unfortunate circumstance her loyalty lies with Queen Levana. If that wasn’t bad enough, Queen Levana had every intention on sending Cress to track down Cinder and the ones to follow her. Later on in the book, Cress finds her freedom but that was not without a cost. Meanwhile, Queen Levana was set on marrying former Emperor Kai. The world’s last hope was in the six hands of Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder. Readers have gone haywire over this series so far, and are awaiting Meyer’s next novel called winter; coming in 2015.

Side Projects

Although Marissa Meyer has made a name for herself in the novelist industry, she still continues to write on websites most freelancers still use, showing that her earlier years as a freelancer haven’t quite worn off. A small prequel to Cinder was made using a Wattpad account, the short story called Glitches. The story evolves’ around Cinder’s emotional turmoil over the plague, causing Cinder to wonder if she has a “glitch” or not, hence the catchy title.

Sure enough, Meyer must’ve thought both Scarlet and Cinder deserved a prequel, and so The Queen’s Army was her next short tale of choice, also beautifully written on the same Wattpad account. The Queen’s Army is a short story following Queen Levana’s biggest creation, “Z”. The story is as compelling as it is needed to see how wonderfully developed Queen Lavana’s characterization is.

Speaking of side projects, Meyer’s fans have been raving about the possibility of an actual movie being made of those dangerously addictive books. Although there is no confirming or denying this potential, active readers are still hoping to see the trailer’s made for the ongoing series to come to life.

The Work

Despite contrary belief, the ability to imagine so much and organize it down to paper to begin the process of novel structure is a lot more tedious than it looks. Meyer is known for counting the seconds until she can get her next idea out on paper. She possesses a special “black folder” for each of her books, all holding research and notes relevant to the making of the Lunar Chronicles series. She’s a firm believer of spending time with research and silly pamphlets for ideas so she can really capture the essence of her story. Marissa Meyer works as a true author should, with dedication to put visualization in her reader’s minds, to allow their own imaginations to peak. Meyer claims to have a theory or “system” she uses when finding structure in her stories, or when having the issue in finding new material to write. “Look around, see what the world has to offer in tiny pamphlets or silly broachers,” exclaimed Meyer, telling the fans of her blog her secrets to success.

Although Meyer’s next book isn’t scheduled for release until 2015, she continues to update her media blogs for her fans with snippits of writing here and there. Currently, she is living the best of both unintended worlds – while fulfilling her dream of being a novelist, and continuing her previous hobby of blogging. All three books from the Lunar Chronicles can be purchased from kindle, amazon, or the nearest book store for a reasonable price. The money is worth the journey into the depths of Marissa Meyer’s unique and unfathomably beautiful stories belonging to a fictional world so bizarre a Wizard couldn’t wish it up if they tried. Be sure to catch her daily blogposts filled with tidbits of spoilers for her upcoming novel Winter, striving to be one of the bests additions in the Lunar Chronicles yet. The series will definitely not disappoint those with an eye for discovering fictional brilliance in a surreal world of nonsensical abilities.
