Terry Spear is an awarding winning American author that writes paranormal romance and medieval romance novels. Terry is most commonly known for works like Heart of the Wolf, Savage Hunter and Heart of Couger.

+Biography

Terry Spear was born in Sacramento, California. A Distinguished Military Graduate of West Texas State University, Terry was one of the first people to graduate from the U.S Army Reserve Officer Training Corp two-year program. She was also a member of the military honor society, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the USAR.

Terry Spear is also a graduate of the MBA program at Monmouth University. She was featured in the institution’s Alumni Magazine. Terry Spear wrote for various genealogy magazines for the United States and Canada, this along with pieces for a teen magazine before finally finding her footing as a full-time novelist.

Terry spent a considerable portion of her childhood reading, showing a preference for mystery, adventure, and mythologies from all over the world. She also enjoyed ghost stories and the paranormal, coming to nurture a great love for Dracula and the wolfman.

Terry Spear is most widely renowned for her work on the Heart of the Wolf series, for which she won the N.O.R Reader Choice Award in 2008. Terry makes an effort to provide a realistic portrayal of a contemporary world within which certain human beings have the power to transform into wolves, fans of the series praising Spear for the crackling chemistry between her protagonists and the unique depiction of pack power dynamics.

Spear’s influences, from Jack London’s Call of the Wild and White Fang, are clearly evident in her paranormal romance works.

+Heart of the Wolf

The sole survivor of a fire that led to the downfall of her entire pack, Bella is a red wolf. Devlyn is a beta male werewolf in a pack of grays. When the alpha male becomes a vicious threat, Bella is forced to flee her adopted gray pack, her life of solitude as a lone wolf only coming to an end when Devlyn, the gray male that rescued her as a pup, comes to bring her back home.

When a local red werewolf goes on a killing spree, Devlyn and Bella find themselves embroiled in the ensuing chaos, fleeing not only from the murderer but the police and their pack leader.

As the full moon rises, her heat upon her, Bella struggles to resist the forces drawing her to Devlyn, her destined mate.

There is a lot to like and dislike about the first novel in the Heart of the Wolf series.

The story kicks things off with Bella determined to reject the advances of Volan, the alpha male of her pack; even as her hearts begins to yearn for Devlyn, the beta male, she cannot help but struggle against her feelings, not if giving in to her desires forces Devlyn to fight against Volan for her in a battle he couldn’t possibly win.

One cannot help but enjoy Heart of the Wolf. Terry Spears portrays the dynamics of a werewolf pack in a manner more realistic and intriguing than most readers will have encountered in any other novel of this nature.

The author makes an effort to explain the structure and hierarchies of the wolves within the various packs, making the conflicts easier to understand and so much more interesting.

While Terry succeeds in the World building aspect of the book, she stumbles with the plot; she simply has too many threads that she tries and ultimately fails to successfully weave into the main story.

Even as readers begin investing into the Bella/Volan plot, things take a turn as the murder mystery takes precedence, this plot also quickly losing relevance in favor of the Reds’ attempts at wooing Bella to their side.

The actual romance between Bella and Devlyn barely lives up to expectations; there are readers who have actually complained that there was simply too much sex in the novel, so much so that any chemistry Terry’s audience was expected to glean between Bella and Devlyn was reduced to their innate desire to get naked and mate.

A lot of the cast members are underutilized while the murder mystery doesn’t receive the sort of satisfactory ending most people might expect.

Overall, even those readers that actually enjoyed Heart of the Wolf cannot ignore the simple fact that Terry Spear’s novel doesn’t really break any new ground.

The plot is as predictable as they get and the romance doesn’t take any notable chances. Terry’s attempts at twists and turns do not pan out as well as she might have expected. The fact that Devlyn and Bella are so bland, especially when they are away from one another doesn’t help matters.

+Destiny of the Wolf

Lelandi Wildhaven is driven by her determination to discover the truth behind her sister’s death, this despite the rumors circulating that she is only interested in making a bid for her sister’s mate.

Darien Silver is a pack leader tormented by memories. He blames himself for the death of his mate. When Lelandi, her twin, comes to town, Darien is immediately bewitched by her, making it his mission to protect her against those forces that seek to destroy her and his pack.

For most people, Destiny of the Wolf is a superior novel to its predecessor, though there is almost no connection between Destiny of the Wolf and Heart of the wolf, so much so that Destiny of the Wolf might as well be a standalone novel.

Lelandi comes to town to solve the murder of her triplet sister, larissa. Moving in disguise to escape the intentions of her cruel alpha determined to force her to mate her with his brother, Lelandi has the sort of strong independent spirit that makes her a great female protagonist, balancing the strength of the alpha Darien.

As with any paranormal romance, Darien and Lelandi are drawn towards each other even as they struggle against the pull. A likable and entertaining couple, the pair are primarily responsible for the novel’s entertainment value.

The book suffers in some places because of pacing, but it is none the less an easy read, well written and crackling with romanc
